परवेज़ मुशर्रफ़ उस वक्त पाकिस्तान के सेना प्रमुख थे. ढाई महीने से ज़्यादा समय तक चली इस लड़ाई में भारत के 527 जवान मारे गए थे. बाद में दस्तावेज़ों से पता चला था कि हमले के पीछे चरमपंथियों का नहीं बल्कि पाकिस्तान सेना का हाथ था. पाकिस्तान सरकार का दावा था कि उसे सेना की इस कार्रवाई की जानकारी नहीं थी. उस दौरान मुशाहिद हुसैन पाकिस्तान के सूचना मंत्री थे. बीबीसी संवाददाता शुमायला जाफ़री ने उनसे ख़ास बातचीत की और पूछा कि फ़रवरी महीने में भारत के प्रधानमंत्री अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी बस में बैठकर लाहौर गए थे. क्या उस वक्त गर्मजोशी से वाजपेयी से मिल रहे पीएम नवाज़ शरीफ़ हमले की योजना से वाक़ई पूरी तरह अनजान थे.
