Don't say Dhoni got supported by country. He was the most hated player after World Cup for his two ducks, ppl conveniently forgetting everyone else folded too but no youngster was hounded the way he was. He came into captaincy in a phase of controversy. If he had lost that T20 the public hate would have gotten even higher. He was blamed by public for seniors getting dropped even though there have been multiple players who have said that Dhoni only gained assertive control in 2012, before that he was not influential in BCCI. BCCI was looking for a scapegoat in Dhoni after 2007 loss, someone young and barely experienced was tossed into captaincy so that the loss can come down at his head. Be real. Dhoni had nothing going for him that World Cup. His seniors and his juniors were suddenly looking to him for support. Shoaib Malik didn't have half the stakes Dhoni had. He was a natural in captaincy that is his achievement alone.
