Rain spoiled Pakistan's chances in the series opener, if there were any. It was Zimbabwe's only 6th ODI win against the Men in Green. The hosts crawled with the bat but outplayed the Mohammad Rizwan-led unit with the ball to go 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series.
The second ODI of the series is to be played at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, on Tuesday (November 26).
Opting to bowl first in the first match, Pakistan made good use of the conditions and squeezed in Zimbabwe for most of the innings. They picked up wickets at regular intervals, with the hosts' batters failing to convert their starts. Sikandar Raza, yet again, made a valuable contribution, but it was because of a very good hand from Richard Ngarava that the home team crossed the 200-run mark.
Spinners Agha Salman and Faisal Akram were the wreckers in chief and shared six wickets equally. Aamir Jamal, Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain chipped in with a wicket each as they joined hands to knock over Zimbabwe for 205 in 40.2 overs.
It was an expected turnaround to the visitors' batting outing as the Zimbabwe bowlers breathed fire right from the get-go. Blessing Muzarabani, Sean Williams and Razan ran riots with a couple of wickets each to see Pakistan reeling at 60/6 in 21 overs when the rain hit the venue really hard.
Skipper Mohammad Rizwan looked helpless at one end, with the batting department going down like a pack of cards from the other end.
Pakistan were 80 runs behind on the DLS method, and the relentless rain didn't allow any further game time, as the Craig Ervine-led unit ensured a well-earned victory.
The tourists need to win this fixture at any cost, or else the ODI series will go the other way, given the rain doesn't play major spoils.
