Pakistani Bagpipes

Just a short video. I was given a challenge are Bagpipes made in Pakisan playable?

There must be different levels of quality in Pakistani made pipes. My first set of pipes were rosewood pipes made In Pakistan. I tried and tried and they won't play. Then I saved up money for my Scottish made Shepherd Pipes and they were playable right out of the box.

I watched another guy on You Tube that ordered these and when he tried using just the chanter the sound out of it sounded like the honking of geese and the braying of a donkey 🤣🤣🤣. It was a piece of junk. Inside the fireplace is a good place for it! What a piece of junk! Bagpipes have an awesome sound to them usually. That Pakistani bagpipe really took the cake!

These pipes may be made specifically for arabic pipe playing as the bag and other hardware are very different than western pipers and their tastes.

@@ChicMackie I have identical pipes… if those have No makers marks…Gord Tuck (an elderly bagpipe maker in 🇨🇦) has had three including mine come through his hands says definitely not Pakistani, they are made very well.. they have Henderson bores.. he thinks a Henderson employee took some tools when he left and made a good many sets of his own… they are very light weight hand turned.. compared to the new MacCallums on the market… I would love to compare photos of them

I used to have a cheap Pakistan bagpipe that played wonderful ...but it was pitched closer to a B flat because they were modelled after British bagpipes of the 1800's ... expensive competition pipes seem to be pitched sharper , closer to a B major .... so my question is , are you guys using modern competition chanters ? Or have the Pakistani makers started to copy more modern pipes , closer to a B major ? Because you guys in this video sound pretty darn close to modern pitch to me..

Yes ... they are playable ! I have a set of Sulshi's and several sets of random others. Bagpipe acquisition syndrom...

They make them with much better wood than they used to. In the 70s they used very soft wood that were impossible to tune. If you looked through the bore of the drones, you could even see strands of wood hanging down inside. They were impossible to smooth anyway. They were also painted black and the mounts were badly fitted dull aluminium-like metal fitted to a thin leather bag. Goodness knows what kind of wood they used back then. You wouldn’t need to play them to know how bad they were, you just needed to lift them and feel how unnaturally lightweight for bagpipes they were. The reason I know these things is because my dad bought me a set for the princely sum of just £15, thinking he’d got a bargain. I tried my best with them but I could tell as soon as I lifted them they could never be tuned. Those sounded ok for what they are, and lightyears ahead of the 1970s ones.

I run a school band and we all play Pakistani pipes. Naturally the students eventually purchase their own sets from any of the major makers. The Pakistani pipes are great for learners, and sound perfectly adequate.

Are you able to get the drones to tune just above the hemp line area on the tenors and the top of bass drone?

In short no. That is a bridge too far😀 Despite Reed adjustment the drones would not tune further up

Probily sound like the very old half sets of pipes made for the boys brigade companies before they were ready for the full set of pipes 50 years a go the pipe shop in blairgowrie phoir moir used to re drill I think it was the b hole plus a few minor adjustments lol I don't think they changed 😀 😆

I believe the same maker may have made mine… are yours devoid of markings??? I just had mine refurbished by an old gentleman named Gord Tuck who’s been making pipes for decades.. he said they are NOT Pakistani made.. furthermore they sound so nice because they have the Henderson bores❗️..a smith from Henderson left and made many sets like this on his own.. Ford Tuck had two set identical to mine come through his hands over the decades so three altogether…I’ve been using newer Duncan MacRae’s until I could get my old pipes like these Refurbished.. I put an old L&M leather bag on it and boy oh boy are they a light weight instrument compared to my MacRae pipes. It’s a more refined /hand turned instrument… Not Pakistani or Indian to be sure.

In Pakistan 🇵🇰 it’s simply called Bag Pipes with different sizes . We didn’t gave it any other name or don’t have a specific brand
