This was during the eighties a wave of what was called "parallel cinema "... small budget movies with good stories and great acting. It gave us great actors like Farouq Sheikh, Deepti Naval, Raj Babbar among others besides the evergreen Nasiruddin Shah, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi. These movies were also the golden period for ghazals in Hindi film music. Both, the movies and the music sadly faded away by the early nineties.

I fell in love with Jagjit Singhs voice maybe in 1984 & since then rarely a day has passed when I have not listened to his songs/gazals.He is ultimate.His voice is soothing & makes you feel the pain/emotions that lyricist wants to convey.one more thing that makes me comfortable & love his songs/gazals is his choice of gazals which are mostly without any religious overtones( generally gazals mostly have references to Allah/Mullah).His gazals are mostly philosophical & I really love them.Salute & respect to legend

Hi dear this I Ajay from Mumbai...I have met shabana azmi twice at airport. Once she was traveling with her father to London.i met her and asked her if I could assist her father in some way as he was not keeping well. She asked for a wheelchair for him.so I arranged it for her and she was very impressed by my prompt service as she was flying by me airline at that time. Second time she was flying to Nairobi and she immediately recognized me and she waved at me and called me.i met her again and asked about her father's health and she replied that he is well now.this happened in 1994.i also met Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh khan and spoke to them also and they were very polite and sweet.

One thing I must say only desi’s can feel such ghazals of Jagjit Singh jee, irrespective of any side of border. These ghazals are immortal now. Various foreigners (angrez) are making videos on movie/song reaction nowadays & they may understand Hindi/Urdu also but they never feel the soul of such ghazals or shayaris.
