I feel like Andre Antunes has given me a window into another culture by showing the deep commonality between the metal music i have connected with ever since i was young and qawwali music from the other side of the world. I'm completely in awe of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan now because to me he is clearly one of the greatest rock stars to ever live.

NFAK was undoubtedly a rockstar since his passing his nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has taken his place along with greats like Naseebo Lal, Aabida Parveen and others. if you feel like exploring further, coke studio Pakistan season 14 and all previous seasons and Nescafe basement Pakistan are both great points of reference for exploration :) I can bet you'll find some playlist worthy music in just season 14 alone, best part is, almost all songs have subtitles and translations in English so you can understand what's being talked about in the music. Let me know how it goes if you do decide to give it a try :) and if you need a more extended explanation of terms or any music or translation you come across, feel free to ask and I'll try and clarify to my best capability. Cheers,

Since the lyrics escape me, does the meaning of the song match the energy and mood of the accompaniment? We all agree that it sounds amazing, but does it match the original mood of the song or is just a good remix?

What is striking about this is not only the fusion of two completely different musical worlds, what Andre does here is basically a continuation of what he did a few years back with western classical music. Making arrangements of instrumental pieces, playing Bach in the stlye of Queen, or Tchaikovksy. And now he does the same with classical music from Pakistan and India. It's logical in its own way.

The point is to NOT elevate and make vocal the centre with minimal supporting instruments. This actually defeats the whole purpose. Nonetheless it is good but if you do that for hours and hours of kawali, headache is inevitable.

I have a different take on the matter.... when you make a movie... you make a trailer that's all the best parts of the movie condensed into 2 minutes, and you use that to market to people who might be interested in checking out the movie. This piece accomplishes just that. It gets people who would otherwise not have known about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to find his music and connect with it, in a way that makes it accessible on a global scale, keeping in mind all musical sensibilities of tone, and balance, keeping vocals central and highlighted. If you go through the comments on this video you'll see people from all parts of the world discovering Pakistani music, falling in love with NFAK's Music. It serves a positive and welcome purpose and opens a whole new wave of audiences from different cultures and background toward the form of qawwali

This came across my recommendations a few days ago and I haven’t stopped humming it since. Andre does a superb job at adapting this beautiful song for a western audience using metal music as a vehicle. I would love to hear more traditional music but someone like me doesn’t have any reference on where it comes from. This reminds me so much of Ronnie James Dio in the style of the guitar playing that it clicked with me instantly, even though I have no clue who this person is. Wonderful reaction!

Well the original musician is Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a pakistani classical music singer. A good starting point for you would be to explore Coke Studio Season 14, it puts a very modern and palatable spin on Pakistani music. Nusrat's nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is alive and well and his music is all over the internet. Best example of his works include the following ( Chaap Tilak - Coke Studio ) ( Aafreen Aafreen - coke studio ) Let me know if you need more reference points to explore this type of music further :)

@@JustAPakistaniGamer At least for me, 30 minutes knowing about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is THE starting point. It is beautiful music, very different what we are used to listen. @JustAPakistaniGamer
@JustAPakistaniGamer Жыл бұрын
best starting point would be to check out anything from Nescafe Basement Pakistan or Coke Studio Pakistan.. Coke studio Pakistan currently released season 14, lots of people have reacted to it on the internet.. The benefit with coke studio songs is that you get Transliteration and Traslation as well in the song.. so you get to understand the meaning as well as understand how to say the words as well, and it's a great starting point for trying to understand pakistani music and start understanding the urdu language in general. Although fair warning, the translations are written for western and european audiences, so meanings are somewhat distorted, what you read means slightly different from what it actually means in spoken urdu... but it serves the purpose of getting you in the general direction of what's being talked about in the songs. I've considered doing more literal translations of the songs verse by verse on my channel, i'd love to to know as a viewer if that's something that might add value for your viewing experience !

Excellent description of their vocal ad libs. Since I started listening to this artist, I cannot help but think the music theory behind singing the tala rhythmic syllables has to be ancestral to American jazz "scat" [short for scatological] singing. But you're right. This is some next-level stuff. The sounds of Nusrat F.A. Khan's group fill my head when I need a dose of joy. I'm looking for translations of the lyrics. As an english speaker, it's tough trying to identify the language then transliterate them. Thanks for this reaction video.
