It originated from Mahabharat. in Mahabharat - Lord Krishna accidentally cut his finger on the Sudarshan Chakra. Seeing this, Princess Draupadi tied a piece of cloth to prevent blood loss. Lord Krishna was deeply touched by her gesture, and in return, promised to take care of her from all evils in the world. During Draupadi's chirharan, when the Kauravas tried to shame and belittle her, Lord Krishna kept his promise by protecting her from dishonour and humiliation. Since then the day is celebrated as Raksha Bandhan.
