Ambassador cars have been around since 1950s. It’s a vintage museum piece car that is kept alive only in Kolkata taxis these days. After liberalisation in 90s , all the world’s top cars started being manufactured in India and the old amby car died a slow death. It is truly a unique vehicle and the ride is a one of a kind experience

In India it was predominantly Ambassador and Premier Padmini cars that were on the roads in the 70s and 80s. These old ambassadors are allowed as taxis only in Kolkata in todays time. Dont judge the Ambassador by the looks of the old taxi that you sat in... Back in the days a new steel grilled ambassador looked regal both inside and outside....Kolkata still has its old world charm because of its trams, ambassadors and vendors on the footpaths.

These old cars may be of nostalgic value. But completely impractical in today’s times. Must be phased out immediately. Unless relaunched with modern technology. Also the lack of parking spaces in the Indian cities force people to park along the roads, blocking one lane on both sides of the roads.

Very nice video. The Ambassador cars were made at a place called Uttarpara about 25 kms from Calcutta. The company which made them was owned by the Birlas and has now shut down. The Birlas literally owned Kolkata, which is why you have Ambassador taxis only in Kolkata, in no other Indian city.

Kolkata is quite underdeveloped compared to any other city in India. These ambassador cars are out of the roads in other cities more than a decade ago. The buses in Kolkata unfortunately are by far the worst in India. Hope they come on par with other Indian cities soon enough.
