Man civic has turbo charger that's why it was slow at the drag race due to a term called "turbo lag" and it needs some RPM to start the turbo but fot the case of grande it has "naturally aspirated" engine and it can give the power instantly that's why Grande won the drag and civic won the roll race.

Another reason might be that transmission is not upto temperature thus the ecu might be limmiting power or thier is more slippage in the transmision by design. Corrolla cvt is far superior and better built then civic also n.a engines are mostly more reliable so in short no matter what reason i give toyota overall has a superior

I have few deductions from this race, either the RS was heat soaking as it is turbo charged or simply the grande has it's ecu unlocked / tuned. It is simply not possible for grande to beat this civic because it has less horsepower and torque altogether. Try to race his grande with another stock grande and exchange drivers to check if it is tuned or not. I have had a 2018 Grande and its pick was plenty fast, still would not match the RS.

Turbo doesn't work at low speed in the start. It needs some speed to boost the power. So, on paper and in actual in drag race, civic 1.5L vs grande 1.8L. There must be some race at speed of 70 kph to get results of turbo.
