The Palace of Justice, officially the Palace of Justice Raymundo Faoro, is the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice of the Federal Government of Brazil. It is located next to the Monumental Axis, between the northern area of ​​the Esplanada dos Ministérios and the National Congress, in Brasília, the country's capital. Inaugurated in 1972, it was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, with a structural project by engineer Joaquim Cardozo.
With a Gothic and modern structure, the Palace of Justice has four facades, with different characteristics. The main one is to the south, which has nine asymmetrical arches, intercepted by six gutters at different levels. Its arches make it resemble the Itamaraty Palace, headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the sides, the one to the east is more open, with rectangular pillars set back and well spaced, while the one to the west has reinforced concrete slabs, forming a brise-soleil.
When talking about its creation, Niemeyer said: "When I studied this palace, the idea came to me to create water games over the planned lake; and I placed them between the columns of the building. It was the first facade of fountains that I imagined and that surprised me. and pleased everyone, as I had sensed."
In the surroundings of the Palace, there is a water garden, designed by landscaper Roberto Burle Marx, responsible for other similar projects in the capital, such as the gardens of the Jaburu Palace, the official residence of the Vice President of the Republic. The Palace of Justice's garden maintains tropical plants typical of the Amazon and its water mirror integrates with the building's waterfalls. On the third floor, there is a winter garden, with a little over ten meters, also decorated by Burle Marx.
