"Palaces for the People: Guastavino and the Art of Structural Tile" is a major exhibition that explores Guastavino tile vaults-an engineering marvel that shaped New York City's architectural identify. Among the exhibition's architecture drawings, historic artifacts, and vivid photographs is Vaulted Views, an interactive video installation that enables museumgoers to "visit" Guastavino landmarks without leaving the gallery.
This short, fly-thru video offers a glimpse at how the unprecedented installation-the brainchild of the NYC-based design collective Studio Indefinit-enables visitors to control the screen's vantage point using a touch-pad controller. Inspired by Hiroshi Teshigahara's celebrated documentary on the architecture of Antoni Gaudi-another Catalan architect and contemporary of Guastavino-Studio Indefinit designed Vaulted Views to enable visitors to move the screen's view to look up toward the magnificent vaulted ceilings or down toward the bustle of city life below.
Palaces for the People is on view through Sunday, September 7, 2014 at the Museum of the City of New York, located at 1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street.
