Nothing, i repeat nothing beats waking up on a yacht that is surfing and you can just relax and feel the waves while enjoying the complete silence.. sure there are some keel noises.. but its all natural.. love it!

I heard on the news some cruise liner has had to turn back in the Atlantic due to stormy weather with passengers confined to cabins. No doubt it's one of these top heavy floating apartment blocks. It certainly wouldn't be QM 2. As an aside, I noticed a weird modern trend in English. There seems to be a ban on using the word "passenger". The passengers were called "guests" I also noted passengers aboard trains are no longer passengers. They are called "customers" Why?

not sure about the being called guests on cruises part.. but it's more accurate to call them customers rather than passengers. a friend in your car is a passenger, but for a business they are paying for a service and therefore are customers.

Steven lee I guess you have never taken a Cruise, when you book a Cruise you are a customer of say Princess Cruise Line but to the Porters, House Keeping Staff and every one else on the Ship that aides you, You are a Guest. Same on a Private Boat.

There is one thing you don't hear mentioned which is paramount and that is safety. It's all luxury, luxury. Personally, I wouldn't trust one of these mega yachts in a really rough sea. Take just one feature, the stern. They all have steps down to water level and an array of doors and hatches. In a rough, following sea, I would be nervous. I assume there are sprinkler systems and auto watertight doors sealing off various sections. Another obvious absence is the lack of easy-to-launch life boats. It is all very well having fancy fun boats within the hull, but they will not help in an angry sea. I realise these vessels are for sailing in gentle waters BUT if one is transferring from say the Med to the Gulf of Mexico, even the best weather forecast cannot guarantee a smooth passage all the way. Mother nature could catch you with your pants down!

That's so when you're caught out in the middle of the Atlantic, the unexpected and unavoidable storm can be tracked. Your attitude confirms what I thought. Safety has been sacrificed at the alter of style, luxury and convenience. I certainly would not want to own a vessel which I knew was patently vulnerable to adverse weather.

+Roger Spinks That's where you're wrong. I know plenty and if you read the points I make you will realize I have experience in large seagoing vessels. These luxury mega yachts are not built for heavy weather. Personally, I would want one designed and strong enough with all safety features to be able to confidently withstand the unexpected gale/storm.

If you were ever in the market i suggest you stick to the Nordic Tug or Nordhaven designs then if you have this concern. these boats are sea worthy but and safe. but no they are not luxury ocean liners. when crossing oceans they lock every thing down and put all the covers on and put away all the fancy glass wear. Owners normally specify there boat to be in a location and then they fly in and meet the crew. it is the crew that does the crossings. its nice as you dont have to wear the uniform and you get to roam the whole boat. unlike when the owner is aboard and you have to stay out of sight. these boats are inspected by Loyd's for there safety systems and are state of the art. I cant say that for the commercial boats i have been on. And speed is safety. sure we cruse across an ocean at 12kn but if bad weather is near we kick it up to 22 to get out of the way. why get kicked if you dont have too. or just change your heading. we dont have set schedules like commercial boats so we dont get caught in storms as much. as for WT doors and the stern. well ist fine. no one goes back there at sea. and ya the whole boat is compartmentalized. So to answer your questions. your incorrect they are very seaworthy. and have very skilled crews. mostley ex military.There record is proven by the number of yachts sunk compared to the same number of Commercial ships lost or destroyed by fire. I feel safer then when im on my own 40' boat.

Would love a utilitarian yacht without all the fluff of high maintenance furniture and crystal and other crap. Definitely down for the two person submarine as well. The issues for me being safety, range, use of fossil fuels and of course, about 100 million dollars. I would love to spend my life traveling the world with friends and family.

But I heard a psychic say that when the earth changes from the north and south pole that there will be a high wind and as well unstable seas and all the ships military and luxury and fishing will be gone they will all sink. Nothing is in the water after that kind of flood and winds and earth movement. It happened before on earth. I just look at ships for great ideas in building houses. Ships are the best for ideas. +Grace Serena Christie That is just a magnetic pole change. If it even happens in our lifetimes all it will do is screw up some older navigation systems. I am guessing modern systems would need adjusting but the people running those systems could cope with it without much difficulty. It has nothing to do with the oceans. It has to do with the metals in the earths core. The turning iron inside the earth creates a magnetic field & it's normal for the magnetic poles to shift regularly. And yes, the earth has had polarity shifts (the field completely flips) in the past & yes, we are due (being due means in the next few million years) but, It's a slow, even process & it will not change anything but the magnetic field around the earth. You & I wouldn't even notice it unless, of course, you use an old school compass to find your way around town. :) In other words, if you got the bucks, buy a boat & rest easy.

A posh car salesman is another way to look at it, Cut out the middleman deal directly with the builder with your accountant and solicitor. Save on taxes and bind them to a legally binding contract.
