I havent seen anyone in present days to reproduce with such a high fidelity the stage presence a la '30s, like Max Raabe does here. The simple fact that this exists is awesome!

Max Raabe is unique. He has a splendid voice with a rare falsetto ability. His small orchestra less a conductor is brilliant and complements his style. Every concert is a performance par excellence.

For those who don't know, this song IS Yiddish!! "Bei Mir Bistu Shein" (Yiddish: בײַ מיר ביסטו שיין, "To Me You're Beautiful") is a popular Yiddish song composed by Jacob Jacobs (lyricist) and Sholom Secunda (composer) for a 1932 Yiddish comedy musical, I Would If I Could (in Yiddish, Men Ken Lebn Nor Men Lost Nisht, "You could live, but they won't let you"), which closed after one season. The score for the song transcribed the Yiddish title as "Bay mir bistu sheyn".[1] The original Yiddish version of the song (in C minor) is a dialogue between two lovers who share lines of the song.

Super swing, et une orchestration de rêve. La violoniste est superbe, la voix du chanteur est un peu particulière, mais elle rend bien l'esprit de cette époque. Merci d'avoir partagé cette chanson, Yuri Retroman ! Thank you very much, that was swell ! Wunderschön !

I think the singer's voice reflects recording techniques of the era, rather than what how sounded performing live.

Lyrics (1:05) Of all the girls I've known, and I've known some Until I first met you, I was lonesome And when you came in sight, dear, my heart grew light And this old world seemed new to me You're really swell, I have to admit you Deserve expressions that really fit you And so I've racked my brain, hoping to explain All the things that you do to me Bei mir bist du schön, please let me explain Bei mir bist du schön means you're grand Bei mir bist du schön, again I'll explain It means you're the fairest in the land I could say bella, bella, even sehr wunderbar Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are I've tried to explain, bei mir bist du schön So kiss me and say you understand Bei mir bist du schön, you've heard it all before But let me try to explain Bei mir bist du schön means that you're grand Bei mir bist du schön, it's such an old refrain And yet I should explain It means I am begging for your hand I could say bella, bella, even sehr wunderbar Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are I could say bella, bella, even sehr wunderbar Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are I've tried to explain, bei mir bist du schön So kiss me and say that you will understand

To think I reached this place through a "child's mean" ... makes me wonder why so much prejudice towards we, 'the young', for having curiosity and interest towards the works of the past, even though having the first contact by a game ...; appreciation, as the protagonist would state, is just but a chemical. We give it meaning by choice. Cheers !
