Back in 1982, I visited the tomb in the temple of the inscriptions, you could walk freely on the site back then. I remember amazing waterfall on the way to the ruins.

I did the same, winter of 1979-80. Remember how narrow the stairway down to the sarcophagus ?! And how “short” the stair treads that made you feel like you had the feet of a giant ? I remember it fairly clearly , considering how long ago I was there . I am EXTREMELY claustrophobic and believe that , had I not been , my memory would even be more detailed. I recall making it to the top of those steps on my way out and sitting in that upper area and realizing I’d barely breathed from the moment I began walking down there , to the moment I reached the top again . I was only 14 , traveling alone , but I realized the importance of seeing as much as I could . I think I knew that it wouldn’t be long before they blocked it off except for study , etc. .

Also, when I was there , there was rumor of a tourist who had lost her mind a bit and has jumped off of the top of The Tower . No idea if it was true .

You were traveling alone in the Mayan jungle at 14?! Man I wish I was a kid in the 70s that sounds way better than video games and marijuana

@@gespachosoup Hi ! Yes, only 14. My mother had pulled me out of my first months of high school as this hippie-chick she’d met at the Portland Saturday Market suggested she travel to Guatemala to get over severe depression, (she had been diagnosed with M.S. and my father had sold our house without telling us at the end of the previous summer and then served divorce papers on her. Schmuck!). Lol, my mother met this 18yo woman that was selling pot-cookies at the market. I traveled with mom to Lago de Atitlan and found a little shack to rent for us. The heat made her M.S. symptoms much worse but she refused to return home. So I left her there and traveled home alone with about 50$ in my pocket. A very different time, indeed.

Any recollection of the number of internal steps of the two major flights of steps down to the tomb?@@lisacolbert5987

PALENQUE: the site of a former Mayan city in SE Mexico, south-east of present-day Villahermosa. The well-preserved ruins of the city, which existed from about ad 300 to 900, include notable examples of Mayan architecture and extensive hieroglyphic texts. THE SO CALLED AFRICAN PEOPLES ARE THE INDIGENOUS 'MAYANS'. IT'S NO WONDER WHY THERE IS A LARGE POPULATION OF SO CALLED 'AFRICANS' THERE.

The Afro community is only 1.4 of a country of 130million ppl in Mexico! You culture vultures r rediculous, there is absolutely NO Afro DNA in the Americas first inhabitants! NADA,NONE,ZERO,ZILTCH! There r several ancient human fossils of the Americas. They looked hard for it, but isn't there! ALL ancient ppl leave footprints! NO DNA, NO WRITTEN OR ORAL HISTORY, NO LANGUAGE, NO TRIBE, NO SPIRITUAL CONNECTION TO ANY TRIBES! Science and genology have told the world, SEVERAL TIMES, we come from one ppl and it ain't Afro! You ignorant culture vultures need to read a science book on non Afro genetic groups, we r classified as a non Afro genetic group, and u culture vultures ain't classified as Native! DNA leaves a trail, Afro trail in the Americas, is NOT seen until AFTER u got here on ships with the white man! Afros were as mean or meaner to the Natives, but USA hides the truth! Take ur rediculous, interloping, intrusive, menacing, meddling, wannabe cullture vulture BS to science and genologists, they disagree with you!

Howmany generations took over these beautiful places that nobody knows who actually built them? It's funny we think we are the most advanced civilization that has ever lived because we are the current living humans. Yet It's obvious we are just ants fighting for the crumbs left by way more advanced civilizations
