STORYLINE:
Palestinians across the Gaza Strip attended their first Friday prayers since the ceasefire began, gathering inside damaged mosques and surrounded by rubble.
In the Nuseirat Refugee Camp, water dripped from the mosque's damaged roof onto the worshippers, as they listened to the Friday sermon.
Torn pages of the Quran were scattered on the ground amid the debris.
Outside, children roamed around flattened buildings and collapsed minarets.
In the southern city of Khan Younis, worshipped assembled their prayer mats outside, holding Friday prayers amongst the ruins of what used to be their homes.
The Palestinian Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs said on Facebook on January 5 that the Israeli army completely destroyed 815 mosques and partially destroyed 151 others in the Gaza Strip in 2024.
Palestinians are confronting an apocalyptic landscape of devastation after the ceasefire paused more than 15 months of fighting between Israel and Hamas.
Across the tiny coastal enclave, where built-up refugee camps are interspersed between cities, drone footage captured by The Associated Press shows mounds of rubble stretching as far as the eye can see - remnants of the longest and deadliest war between Israel and Hamas in their blood-ridden history.
