Thanks! Probably handle tornadoes as well as most houses- not well! For a better tornado home look at my straw bale and shipping container home. This one is designed to be cheap shelter but could be improved with more structural supports if desired.

Good job,its a solid basic design,and of course the more effort one puts into the build the better the cabin will turn out.I like it.

standard fiberglass insulation fits quite nicely in the pallet cavity for a colder enviroment than you picture. I built a nice little insulated house for my hottub pump out of pallets to cut down the noise that way

@BullittMcQueen1 4x4 corner posts and a ridge beam could be used to support a roof that would handle snow load. I designed this one for people in countries where building material is not available.

Any house is a solar oven in Pheonix lol! I worked in Mesa and it was 115 in mid day and no one works outside in that weather. This design is for moderate climates and all houses need to be well insulated.

Your info for shingles was incorrect and may mislead people to not using them. Shingles are used on houses every day and are an approved building material. Tar paper under shingles prevents water and wind penetration and would stop any off gassing you mentioned.

@solarcabin -- I see. This one looks like one of the easiest designs to build, and many of the materials can be had for free. I think I would double it in size, and then it would be perfect. Your cabin has a loft that gives you a bedroom, so I would add more space with this pallet house to have room for a bedroom.

Fiberglass insulation is in most homes but you can use whatever you want.

seems like this would be a good frame, with the "gaps"between the boards of the pallets it seems it would be easy to attach or tie in straw bales to increase insulation values and then add a earthen plaster.loft style trusses could be added for an upper room with a tin roof and part of that roof could have the clear fiberglass roofing tin "i guess its called"for lighting.i could see something like this having potential even for homeless here in America

I would add one more post in the middle area of the long walls for extra sturdiness, and for more roof support. A good design overall. @joejoemorgan - I believe the idea is that old pallets tend to be cheap/free and readily available in struggling areas of developing countries and in refugee camps, whereas standard dimensional lumber tends not to be readily available or cheap/free.

I see on Craigslist that people are always giving away wood pallets. I think if a person looked around he could also find people giving away other leftover material, maybe even tar paper and some shingles. It states that this house is for warm climates. It seems that if insulation was put into the wood pallets that it would be good in cold climates also. I guess the roof would not handle snow, though. Maybe a shed roof would solve that.

Would you need to put a layer of Tyvek between the exterior walls and the siding?

I'm returning to Hawaii and will be building a house there. Won't termites be a big problem for this kine house?
@thotpatrol33557 жыл бұрын
jahmallajaima ik this may be a three year old comment, but if you dont want termites eating the pallets, maybe add a coating onto the wood for example putting polyester on the wood pallets

In my opinion. 2 by 4 framing would still be cheaper. The heavy screws and additional labor to handle the pallets would be more expensive than purchaig 100/2 by's...The insulation would go in easier also.
@CoriousSam12 жыл бұрын
Fiberglass insulation is still commonly sold in building supply stores. "Exposed fiberglass insulation- you could cover with 6 mil poly to seal the fiberglass dust, which is very bad for you since it scratches you lungs. However exposed batt insulation is illegal and against fire codes.It must be covered with at least 1/2" drywall." -contractors forum The insulation in this video is not exposed. Perhaps you are confusing this with asbestos, which is illegal.

I am glad I didn't pay for this. Why did you go 12 ft high? (Pallets are 4 ft square or 48 x 46 sometimes.And why no slope to the roof? Why not use fiberglass insulation as most homes in the last 70 years have used. And new homes still are, better than foam panels, no mildew growth and does not burn in a fire. Just don't handle it without a respirator and gloves and a long sleeve shirt. but it is less irritating than concrete if you touch it during installation. This is a good structure to insulate with straw stuffed into the pallets for insulation. Also at 16 feet a rafter size of 2" x 8" x 20' every 4 feet could support pallets for the roof to. Then just put tar paper over them or use 20 ft long metal roofing panels and make one side 48 inches higher than the other so water runs off.(Just use an extra layer of pallets on one side..( 2 x 6 spans 12 feet and 2 x 8 spans 20 feet.) The 20 instead of 16 gives a 2 ft overhang on each side.

Thanks Dennis- this is just to give people ideas for using pallets. The roof slopes to the beach. They come in all sizes and you would need a bunch the same size to build a structure. Straw would be a good insulator and a tyvec or tarpaper wrap. Shingles are inexpensive and will last 30 years and water proof so also a good building material.
