Great video, takes me back 50+ years to my school days when we were taught to make things with wood & steel instead of worrying about what gender we were or whose messaging you on the mobile phone. If only they taught crafts at school today I am sure a lot of children would be less stressed.

David Bainbridge - I completely agree with you, I have always enjoyed woodwork and spent my time growing up in the woods with my brothers and cousins building dens. Not on the WiFi or texting. Hopefully projects like this that cost very little and can be done relatively easily will help. 😊👍🏻

Good to show. With the ever diminishing woodland all over the world and especially in Europe the birds need all the help they can get. This is way better than the "pretty" and expensive ones found in garden centres, they are expensive and the varnish is often toxic. Varnished bird tables have already taken a toll on greenfinches among others. Birds only care that they are dry and safe from predators. Cheap boxes like this encourage more people to make them. All the best.

RHINO 54 - Thank you Very much mate. You have absolutely tapped in to what I was hoping to promote. Free reclaimed wood, biodegradable, a home for our songbirds and a fun project people can get behind. Please if you think it will help. Share it on. 😊👍🏻

Thankyou John, our birds and wildlife need all the help they can get. These boxes provide much needed shelter in winter too when the weather is really bad . Magic 💜🐦🐣

Roxie Morrell - I absolutely agree Roxie, especially for small garden birds and such. With the reduction in hedgerows and wild seed common land they need all the help they can get. Even the common house sparrow due to modern gutters and loft insulation is in decline. If every family in the country made just one box or feeder the problems would be sorted halved overnight. 😊👍🏻

Lovely box from pallet wood. But a few suggestions if I may : 38mm hole is far to large for blue tits - 28mm is ample. No perch required as it helps predators. Four or five quarter inch drainage holes should be placed in the bottom. Pallet wood is often soft and rots quickly, so I cover the roof with felt or something similar. You need to be able to open the roof, base or other face so you can clean it annualy. Small hinges or swivels work fine. Lastly I suggest you give the outside (never the inside) a coat of water-based preservative. This is not meant to be a criticism but a suggestion.

Little projects like these and the foraging/cooking , you do with the family are great for kids to watch . At one time we were taught these skills at school . We did woodwork , and were shown how to use lathes and blacksmithing etc in metal work . This all seems to have stopped some time ago , and through no fault of their own a lot of young uns don't seem to know how to use basic tools or even repair a tyre puncture on their bike in my experience .

Rik M - It is a sad truth Rik. I have noticed it myself, less actual life skills and more time spent on passing a test and going to university. Like that will solve all your problems 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

I really like projects made out of pallet wood. Good idea with the bird box. I love reusing wood that most people would throw away. Keep up the good work.

This is a great and cheap way of helping the environment. We have to use a bit of tin can around the entrance where I live or the woodpeckers get in and remove the chicks!

"...or make it smaller for sparrows..." The sparrows in my area don't need more places to live... they've already taken over all the holes in every house in the state!

I leave mean comments - Here they are in great decline due to better house insulation and guttering. So they need all the help they can get. One thing people don’t grasp is if there are less birds like sparrows. There will be more insects and bugs. I know which I prefer. 😉👍🏻

Hello my friend, Superb work done, Thank you for our Winged Friends, but how do you clean and disinfect the interior of the Nest?. To avoid humidity and mold which could declare devastating diseases it is necessary to drill holes on the bottom of the nest, one at each cardinal corner and one in the center, for the roof part I make an offset on each side to avoid rotting upper slices and finally I use linseed oil heated in a bain-marie without boiling as an exterior protection, no varnish, no paint, the process must be renovated each year. Sincerely, Alain from Belgium.

Hi John, your box is too big for Blue Tits. The 38mm hole is ok for sparrows, but Blue Tits only need 25 mm. The difference IS IMPORTANT as it stops predators.
