Palms & Exotics UK

Күн бұрын

The Fourth in a series of monthly videos about growing palm trees and exotic looking plants and other tropical style planting in North West England, UK.
Featuring:
Moving a Trachycarpus Fortunei palm tree - I show you how to transplant a Windmill palm. I dig up the palm and plant it into a pot as a temporary measure.
Adding more bark to the play area to freshen it up.
Trimming my largest Trachycarpus Fortunei. I show what tool to use to cut off palm fronds and debate whether i should trim the leaves off my Windmill Palm tree.

I find it refreshing and a lot more realistic to see someone who has a hardy tropical garden and kids. It's not easy or indeed cheap to please everyone.

i compost basically everything that comes out of my garden, havent had waste collection for years. i just constantly empty it and spread it around the beds. plants obviously love it, putting nutrients back into the soil and garden instead of slowly getting rid of it theough waste collection

Very interesting! Do you mean you spread only semi-composted matter in the beds or do you have enough room to wait for things to break down fully?

@@palmsexoticsuk2194 i leave it to compost as long as possible. i have an actual compost bin, and then a pile next to it if theres no room in the compost bin, once it breaks down it creates more room in the compost bin which i top up with material from the pile. then i check the bottom of the compost bin to see if its broken down enough and then i take some out and use it if it has. it takes up a back corner of the garden about 2m2 max, and its surrounded by plants anyway so you cant see it

Check the underside of the frond. If it's silvery underneath it could well be a nova (unless princeps hybrid)

@@vincenzecalzone8666 thanks! Been raining all day but just took a look and there’s perhaps a hint of silver but I think that’s because I’m looking for it :(

Hiya, I started my tropical style garden last year. I have a couple of Trachis, one very small and the other about the size of the one you were digging up behind the swings. How old is the one you dug up and how old is the massive beauty you have in the centre? Btw, I am planting out musa basjoo as soon as the weather settles, so will hopefully gain height there whilst waiting for the other plants to grow. Cheers.

Hi Tim, I think my big trachycarpus is probably about 10 years or so from seed. It’s been in the raised bed for about 4-5 years. I can’t remember how old the smaller one is I’m afraid!

Hi Ron, I’m not very good at compost! I have a single plastic compost bin but it’s not very productive. It’s tucked away in a shady corner so I don’t think it gets hot enough

Why don’t you compost garden waste ? Save you having to wait for it to be emptied again.😂👍
