Palmyra Atoll, Line Isl., provides a unique opportunity to assess how a natural coral reef ecosystem functions in the absence of major anthropogenic impact. While current estimates place shark biomass at 60% of total fish biomass at Palmyra, these estimates have relied on visual surveys that are plagued by a lack of comparability and reproducibility. Previous abundance estimates are therefore useful to qualitatively describe the relative population size on this pristine reef, but they lack the precision necessary for a quantitative understanding of trophic structure and function.
To address this knowledge gap, the Nature Conservancy and the Palmyra Atoll Research Consortium are collaborating to complete a mark-recapture reef shark population study. The goal of the study is to establish a baseline measure of mature and sub-adult grey and blacktip reef shark abundance absent human impacts. Visit TNC for more information: www.nature.org/...

Yeah, the tuna head drop at the end was crazy! I have a lot more footage from a gopro that we had attached to a deep line that I am putting together that is similar.

Hi, I am doing a research on capture-recapture. Were (or are) you doing multiple recaptures? If you don't mind, can I ask some questions? Do you capture them for the first time, tagged them, release them, then capture the second time, if its tagged then release them back and if its not, you tag them (and so on)? Thanks, T

+Tania Halim Yes thats it! For different scientific mathematical models we note if its a tagging effort or recapture effort though. Even if it is a recapture effort we still tag it if its a new individual but it goes into the model differently. All in all, you want to get a certain percentage of the population tagged. This percentage is calculated based off how many tags you put out and the proportion of individuals on a recapture event that come up previously tagged.
