One of my most favorite ballets, can also be one of the most confusing! A mentally unstable male lead, 7 pas de deux with 6 different women... Pam explains Mayerling, Act One. And, who is Mayerling??! Read the true tragic story here: sergeipoluning...
Choreography: Sir Kenneth McMillan
Music: Franz Liszt
Cast:
Crown Prince Rudolf - Sergei Polunin
Mary - Ksenia Shevtsova
Performance Notes:
The Stanislavsky Ballet at the Bavarian State Opera Theater, 2017.
Sergei Polunin is a Ukrainian-born ballet dancer. Famous for his “once every hundred years” talent, he has incredulous elevation and impeccable technique. From an early age, he displayed glorious dramatic range. Home videos of him as a tiny boy improvising to Pavarotti are very foretelling. At age 19, he became the Royal Ballet’s youngest ever male principal dancer.
Ballet gained an unprecedented new awareness when he danced in Hozier’s viral video ”Take Me To Church.” People who would never
have paid any attention to ballet began to watch the tattooed phenom. He is generally attributed with bringing ballet to the modern common man. Classical, yet cutting edge, Sergei starred in Diesel’s “Make Love Not Walls” campaign and has put his mark on many other promotions.
Sergei is a much sought after model and actor. Fashion designers love his breathtaking physique and brooding good looks. He has garnered only positive reviews for his acting. His appearances include Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of the Orient Express, the biographical documentary Dancer, The White Crow, and Red Sparrow.

The "Mayerling Incident" has always fascinated me endlessly - ever since our lecturer at drama school made us research it then required us to do improvs based on and around it. Intriguingly decadent - mayhem, murder and madness - excellent ingredients for a 2nd yr drama student with an acute sense of melodrama ! One can hardly believe that MacMillan created/choreographed this masterpiece more than 4 decades ago. It hasn't dated one iota. It is generally accepted that this must be THE most demanding role for a male dancer, requiring exceptional stamina, technique AND acting skills from him THUS quid pro quo ideally suited for Sergei Polunin in his quest for new challenges to conquer: a compelling dancer in a compelling ballet. Pam sweetie, you've once again treated your followers/admirers to a banquet; a feast fit for us balletomanes who sometimes yearn for more stimulation from The Dance. Thank you so much for the splendid upload. Can't wait for Acts II & III . . . 👏💖👍💘👏 Oh, and btw, your curtain call was memorable. 🎩🌟🎩🌟🎩

Thank you for explaining. Looks exhausting being a Russian Prince and even worse for his poor new wife. Must be very emotional for the dancers portraying this. Awaiting next acts. Thank you for posting and explaining.

Thank you! After all the researching, I thought I ought to share. I couldn't have been the only one who was confused by this ballet lol. And, yes, I can only imagine how draining (and saddening) it must be to dance this ballet.

@@PamBoehmeSimon yes it must be exhausting going in every day to dance such emotion, but at least you get to dance with Sergei, do you speak Russian Pam? Did you get my link to Sergei's recent Russian interview?

Rudolf was not Russian, but Habsburg, son of Emperor and King of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Franz Josef and Qeeen Elizabeth "Sissy". He had to marry someone of royal blood, they picked Stephanie from Belgium. Vetsera Maria was a Hungarian baroness too low in ranks to marry a crown prince.

Unfortunately the historical background is not so romantique. When Leopold the second decided to marry his daughter Stephanie 15 years old with Rudolph, it was with a political purpose, his wife was Austrian and Hungarian and he wanted his daughter empress of Austrian- Hungarian empire. Rudolph was interested by sciences especially electricity, he wrote some papers about this subject but of course, Frantz Joseph was not happy with the political views of his heir and his close friends especially a nephew of Clemenceau very liberal and his Hungarian friends ready to prepare “a coup d ‘Etat”to give him the crown.Rudoph was a probleme for many politicians and he was cleaver and interested by many intellectual subjects but the women were a solution for his despair, his frustration and Marie Vetsera very young was at the wrong moment, wrong place...pushed by her mother..I was in the monastery of Mayerling, beautiful quite place for the memory of a murder. Fortunately the second wedding of Stephanie was happy with a Hungarian count, she never came back to Austria, to Belgium, she died in Hungary. It’ a summary Of that sad story with the sad ending of First world war. With Rudoph as king, maybe it would be different?!

How fascinating!!! I had not read some of these details before. Good to know that poor Stephanie was able to find happiness... and you have visited the monastery? I imagine it was a very solemn and moving experience... Thank you so much for your knowledgeable comment and personal addition to the story.

What an unbelievably interesting background to the " M.I. " Really gives an added dimension to this tragic grim tale, the details of which are almost too sick to contemplate. Sincerely appreciated.

Ah thank you, Pam. Another beautiful Sergei video. I hate to link to another video but I was curious if you saw these interviews with Sergei: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2faeHuDr8iSjMU Do you think the second woman is being very rude to him, even asking about what if he goes to have sex and a girlfriend has to see his Putin tattoo. Very over the line. The interview starts at 20:20
