Thank you! Thank you! For years I’ve been told because I have pale skin and blue eyes that I must be “Fair” with cool undertones. But cool toned makeup always made me look like a vampire…I.e. dead. I finally settled on a shade of foundation that made my skin look the best and basically ignored the labels. Now that I look at it, it’s a neutral. My natural hair color is almost black and I have blue-green eyes and turns out my skin tone is “Light” and not pale. I am Light with neutral undertones that tend toward pink but too much pink makes me look awful. So, short story, thank you for clarifying that you can be neutral with a tendency toward cool or warm undertones as well. Cheers!

I love that you told people to use the chest to figure out skin tone. The face is very hard to tell because it's usually lighter than the body. Also the easiest way I've learned about skin tone are by the colors you wear. The color that you tend to buy that looks amazing on you and you get the most compliments plays on skin tone. Bright jewel toned colors look amazing on cool toned skin all except bright red it can clash. Natural colors like orange, brown, and reds look amazing on warm skin tones. Neutrals tend to look amazing in true red, and more muted colors, also black, and Grey's. But bright colors can wash out your skin. This is the best way for me to determine skin tone since it's hard to tell sometimes, especially if your neutral. Love your tips, they are always awesome!

TheMotormouthmomma this is a good color summary. I agree. As a neutral I can wear almost anything (except pastels) and they’re ok, but muted and black are definitely what looks best.

Oh.My.Word...I was super confused having grown up thinking I had a cool undertone. My skin is super fair and I burn quite easily with lots of blue veins. I'm a dark brunette with brown eyes and so I applied your techniques which left me leaning towards the neutral warm camp. I went to two separate makeup counters and they both told me that I'm a neutral that leans towards the warmer side and my skin has an olive color which makes me harder to match a foundation to. The second girl was so kind and helpful explaining it all and I found a great new foundation that matches me perfectly! Thank you so much for this video...it was quite the eye opener!!

@jenniferfrolish Your reply sounded so much like myself. I'm curious if you can share the best product you found. I always knew I was a Warm/Neutral bc I had light brown eyes until my 20's and they had golden flecks. I always tanned, never burned. My veins look green & blue ... I used to use 3 different colors of a Lancome creamy foundation and mix them as my skin went from dark tan in the Summer to my Scot / Irish pale white in the winter. Exactly the coloring of my Dad. I've been sick with Lyme Disease and Long Covid so I haven't worn any makeup and my face is so clear 🤔 hmm. 4 years ago I was wearing Bare Minerals on my face, can't remember my one go-to shade but it was a Warm or Neutral and I went through a million different under eye concealers from MAC and none looked like my right shade/color. Help ✌🏻.

What about the olive undertone Gemma? We’re the most overlooked camp. So if you have trouble finding the right shade of foundation and it never looks right you might be olive toned. We tend to get put in the neutral group because of the vein test. At the beauty counter I get put in the warm category because I have a yellow overtone. So the last thing I need is a warm foundation with more yellow which will make me look like a banana or an orange. Neutral colours are sometimes almost exeptable but still slightly off and can make an olive look sallow or greyish. What’s missing in these foundations is the green pigment. Only few youtubers get this because they are olive toned themselves and can help shed some light. Contrary to what many believe olive skin is not nesessarily dark. Olive skin ranges from fair to very dark. And to confuse things even more: there are cool and warm olives! It’s not easy being green!

I was astounded when a makeup artist told me i was an olive undertone. I had never heard of a fair olive. I am a very fair skinned blonde w teal green eyes w a prominent golden starburst. I have always been able to tan a light golden "blonde" tan, I have noticed that some neutral foundations make me look grayish. What is the solution?? I had to smile. It's not easy being green. So clever.

Absolutely right-on about the olive undertone. Thirty years I spoke of that at a Nordstrom cosmetic counter and the rep practically screamed in protest. I can see the slight greenish cast. I was proclaimed a “winter” years ago when I had my colors done. I can go warm and cool but not to either extreme. Magenta, but not more plum than that. Poppy but not orange. Neutral is my undertone, which is a great advantage. Greek background, brown eyes and salt and pepper hair. Great fun to play with color. I custom mix liquid my foundation, which works great. Wonderful video. Thanks.

Washing Tip! I make my own washing powder. I use a couple of small finely **grated blocks of "Household soap" (*The Green One) not any beauty soaps for washing the body or hands. Add a bag of Washing Soda/Soda Crystals (£1 from Tesco) and a tub of Oxyclean from any £shop. Mix it all together in a large airproof container and use one small scoop (from the Oxyclean) per load in with the washing. One and a half if it is heavily soiled. I think it costs about £5 for around 70-100 washes. It gets all stains out, takes about an hour to make but more importantly, it doesn't make my skin itch. Even on my eczema areas. I use a squirt of white vinegar (39p a pint from Tesco) as a fabric conditioner. It takes out any soap residue from any washing detergent and leaves no smell at all. Towels will be super soft and soon get back their natural absorbancy. *Green Household soap, the kind your Great Granny used, available from Ebay or Amazon. **Cover mouth & nose with a bandana when grating soap or you will sneeze your head off. Wash hands VERY well after handling the soap for long periods or wear gloves.

It was used for everything. Grated for washing clothes and dishes. They'd clean the the doorsteps with it, most things in fact. The pink Carbolic kind was used in hospitals because of it's antiseptic properties. Get this, it was even allowed to be used in schools in the UK up until the 1960s as a form of corporal punishment. Lipsticks for warm skins are: Orangey red based, orange based, and or brown based. For instance, Revlon has some nice lip stains, one I have is called "Fired Up," another is called "Fire and Ice," those are some good reds, and two good pinks for warm skintones are: peachy pinks, peachy nudes, orange lipstick, and brown lipstick. I'd start there.

@autumn34995 жыл бұрын
Sometimes its more than just the hue thats important. Value and tone make the difference for some people, so also looking at light/dark, or vibrant/muted, are key factors. I’ve always hated trying to figure the warm/cool thing out. The veins, my hands are blues & purples, my arm is green, and the wrist is literally where the two run together. Silver and gold look good, most my jewelry is two toned cause of that. So neutral obviously but then there’s quirks. I’m brunette & brown eyes and warm hair colors are definitely needed, I look ill if I go ashy, but then in conflict wearing some warm colors are horrible on me. I don’t tan well and have a lot of pink on the surface of my skin. I typically do better with cool tones but they cannot be light or pastel or I look ill. Over years of figuring things out mostly with clothes, I’ve determined for me its not the color that’s important in most cases, but the value and tone. Darker, muted colors, whether cool or warm, are best for me. Although taste wise I’m always drawn to those in the cool side as all my favorite colors are there so thats what I wear. 😋

That video here is a national treasure for anyone interested in make-up. It helped me to finally decide that I am neutral, leaning towards cool. I prefer silver to gold jewelry and I never tan. I have green eyes and I have both green and bluish-purplish veins on my wrists. BUT there also is a definite hint of yellow to my very pale skin. That left me wondering for a long while. But I decided to also look what I prefer instinctively. Like, my lipsticks are always more of a bluish red than a yellowish red. I prefer silver jewelry on me and have always done so. If gold at all, it needs to be a very pale gold or white gold (white gold has a much warmer undertone than sterlings silver, which is crispy cool). So what I’m saying is that most of the times we instinctively go for the things that suit us better. For instance, I love fall colours but I would never wear them because they look sad on me.

I'm a solid neutral and I'll wear warmer tones for Summer and cooler for Winter. My struggle has always been trying to find cosmetics that complement me with my hair colour because my palettes needed to change when I changed my hair (It's naturally silver now and so far anything goes) Regarding your laundry whites - we are a karate family and I wash a lot of white uniforms, I wash them in colourless detergent - no bluing "whites wash" as that stuff will grey clothes over time, with an added tablet of laundry bleach. ditching those blue tinted detergents will make a huge difference. Also, those tips of using hydrogen peroxide to brighten whites (and remove underam yellowing) only works on 100%cotton, never use on poly/cottons as it'll turn them bright urine yellow; I learned that the hard way.

We used to use a white laundry soap called Ivory back in the US, it came in a powder or block. The "oxy" in oxyclean is a granulated hydrogen peroxide. It's not an issue unless it's left on poly/cottons and then put in the sunshine. I had been using a bit of Borax in the wash (Hot summers here means the washing machine is a germ pit) but then my daughter stole all of it to make slime!
@hellsbells86896 жыл бұрын
Borax is no longer allowed to be sold here in the UK. I think it was to do with one of it's ingredients being slightly too high on EU safety scale. So we now have a Borax Substitute available but it costs way more than Borax ever did. I used to use Borax in my laundry, when my son was in cloth nappies/diapers.

Hi Hells Bells, how much vinegar would you use for a full load. Thanks for the tips, I might give this a try. :)
@hellsbells86896 жыл бұрын
In my UK front loading machine, I just add a good squirt into the fabric conditioner drawer. So maybe 35 mls at most, each wash load. It will neutralise all smell. It just smells of nothing lol If I want it to have some kind of smell I add a tiny cap full of Zoflora disinfectant in with the vinegar. That would be less than a teaspoon full. My fiance is an American, so when I am there and using his top loader, we pour a little vinegar into the final rinse water. With it being such a big machine I'm guessing we use around a quarter to a half of a Cup. I can't be accurate on the measurements as I'm a "Do it by eye" kinda gal. I suggest just giving it a try. Start small and add a little bit the next time if you don't like the result. :-) I hope this link will post on here. www.wikihow.com/Add-Vinegar-to-Laundry

Fair skin,I have all three shades of veins and hazel eyes but dark brown-black hair and I can't tan. I always get burnt or I don't get any color at all. People always ask me if I've been to the beach 🙄 Since I have a lot of moles and I've burned myself a lot before because I was stupid and careless, lately I always use a protective cream on my body. But let's say if I smeared with something that attracts the sun (like before) I would manage to get some light color. When I use beta-carotene, the color goes orange, if I smear with olive oil, for example, it is olive. As for clothing, I always lean towards warmer shades as well as gold, but maybe that's just a personal preference because I don't like silver (somehow it looks cheap to me, while gold is more refined) Black is too sharp, the optic white is flashy, dirty (I would say vintage) white suits me better. All shades of blue, from light to dark look awful on me (I look like a dead man).Grape, lavender and mostly all pastel colors also don't suit me. Although as for pinks, I think fuchsia suits me well. P.S. On the folds of my neck, armpits, inner elbows, etc., my skin is greenish/yellowish. So, where do I belong? 🤦🏻♀️

I've started choosing neutral tones in foundation and believe they suit me best so I may be neutral/cool if there is such a thing. 😕

I agree with everyone below - love your videos and would be amazing to have tutorials for different undertones. I have very similar colouring to you (dark eyes, beige skin tone, blonde hair - but I'm definitely a cool). I adore peaches and corals but struggle to find ones that suit. Is it even possible with cool undertone?

I have a warm undertone but a cool overtone (Deep Winter in the season colour analysis) so I am kind of neutral makeup wise but leaning to cool therefore some neutral foundations look yellow on me if they have more yellow pigments than blue. It's tricky sometimes....

Another good way to tell your skin tone is what colors are you more drawn to? What colors do you have more of in your closet? What colors do you have more of in your home decor? Cool tones look good in silver, black, grey white and pastels. Warm looks good in autumn deep colors. Brown, maroon, Burnt orange, forest green, olive, cream or ivory and gold. Warm I am neutral that leans more on the warm side. My veins are blue green. Hair is chestnut and eyes are hazel. I'm light to med skin tone. I can burn but takes a lot. I never wear sun screen and burn usually once and at most twice untill I start tanning. I look my best in autumn/fall colors but also look really good in pink and in dark blue. I can wear some winter colors. I look good in black and both cool and warm reds. I also look AMAZING in most shades ( cool or warm) of purple.

I am extremely pale. This video was rather confusing for me as I basically have no color. People always say I'm white as a sheet. I'm not sure how to go about this. Can you give me any suggestions?

Like I said before, if you still don't understand your undertone after this video, you might be best visiting the makeup counters. I can't help without you being in front of me xxx

This is not always the case, often people (like me) have chosen colours they like, for me thats black white pink silver. I have done the tests and I'm warm so my choices were based on my colour preference and not what suited me. I don't know what I will do now. I don't like warm colours even though I can now clearly see they suit me better! Lol

You are right! I visited a MAC counter thinking they would give me the most precise info about my skin undertone. Good Lord, I ended up buying a NC20, which is wasaaaay lighter and cooler. The person was testing my neck, the inside of my arm. A disaster.

Also, look at your eye pattern. If you have a starburst or the spiral, if you have smokiness, or icy patterning in your eye, you're cool toned. Too if you freckling, you're warm toned.

My skin undertone is definitely cool, but I'm a redhead which throws it all off, or at least skews me a bit neutral, I can definitely handle a wide range of color, but anything other than cool toned base/concealer/powder goes instantly yellow on me. My hair also makes pastel colors look hideous, with pink being the only exception. Lots of trial and and equal amount of error 😂!!

When I was a young woman, I had a light olive complexion and tanned very easily but, as I've aged, my skin seems to have lightened. I have brown eyes, and my veins look kind of greenish to me. I've always tended to wear silver jewelry, but I'm not sure if that's just a personal preference. I look best in and prefer jewel tones, with some pastels like mauve, periwinkle, and lavender as well. I feel like that would indicate neutral with warm tones, but I'm not sure. What do you think? This video was very informative, especially for someone like me, who doesn't know too much about skin and makeup. Thank you.

Great! I was always confused about my undertone. I guess I'm neutral with a very slightly tentency to warm. I never heard about the brown eyes and easy tanning before but it's something I always wondered about. All the other tests were about the vains, the white paper and the juwelry... My mother used to say: "You're like a gypsy... everything suits you..." I think she was right without ever hearing about skintone or tests! Can you please do something more about this like, what colors lipstick, hair, and fashion should suit us? Especially when you want to buy a red lipstick. Really red, like for Christmas. It's so important to find the right shade, I never buy those things online. You have to go into a store...test it out and go outside to see the color!!!

I’ve been colour matched at Dior and Armarni whom said I had a warm undertone, I want to Estée Lauder and Clinique whom advised me I was cool, I’m pretty sure I’m neutral because as long as they have my skin colour correct they all seem to match my undertone, I know in red lipsticks I can wear both orange red and blue reds and they both look OK neither stands out as suiting me more than another. I have a fair skin tone with green eyes and used the white paper you advised and my skin was just ivory neither pink nor yellow so I’m assuming that indicates neutral too? Great video as always. X

My wife has hazel eyes and is definitely cool-toned (with reddish hair), I have blue eyes and am warm-toned. The blue eyes/warm-toned thing is very common in Scandinavia and among those with Scandinavian heritage and in the Netherlands. The blue eyes/cool-toned combo is more of a British thing. My whites also go grey. What gives?

Great explanation video! Everything you said is spot on. The only thing I would add is that Sephora is another good place to go since they have that little machine. Also, why on earth does M.A.C. Label their foundations like that?! It is so annoying and really confusing!

1. Idk am I blueish/orangeish? 2. I have dark brown eyes = warm 3. Burn Reddish but Do not tan = cool 4. Veins, blue and greenish = neutral 5. Jewelry idk If it's preference or not, but I think I look better with silver than gold. So am I cool? But whenever I tried use gold or silver fabric, I think I look better with gold? 6. White piece of paper, little bit yellow doesn't have any pink or blueish. 7. All this time I always use a foundation with warm undertone, but I don't why the colour suit me but sometimes I look more dull/too orange. I think it depends on the product Does it mean I have neutral undertone? I am still confused

Hi Gemma, we are still in lockdown here in he Netherlands and there is no date set for re-opening. I’ve been wanting to try the Pat Mc Grath foundation and I went on their website and I guessed which shade I am. What is your opinion on shade finders which you can find on a lot of websites? Can I trust the suggested shade? Any advice would be appreciated

My first color analysis approximately 30 years ago (around age 40), indicated my best color palette was a “winter.” About 15 years later, I had 2nd color analysis and was told I was a “spring.” Ten years ago, my color analyzer said I was a “summer.” I believe this last analysis to be accurate. I am definitely cool. Heathered/muted colors and silver jewelry look best. Black is too harsh. All this said to testify the “experts” have had a difficult time analyzing my skin tone. So, would you say I should go with neutral foundations or ones with pink undertones? 🤪 HELP!
@Marxnchill3 жыл бұрын
Yay I think I’m neutral since my veins are both blue and green but blue is def more dominant
@pav-ig4mv3 жыл бұрын
My eyes are like mainly greyish blue but sometimes look greenish and I tan easily but after a while burn. One arm of my veins look blue green and the other on look blue purple. But it doesn't make sense because not every color looks good on me. When I wear lipsticks most are too vibrant for me. Red makes me look pale. I do look good in sky blue and royal blue. When I wear neutral colors though I look wierd. So I have to to mix cool and warm colors to look good. And also I'm not pale but I am really light skinned.

Just thought of another way to determine skin tone. Is L’Oreal True Match foundation available in the UK? This line has LOTS of foundations in warm, neutral and cool. Seems like the quickest way would be to get a warm, cool and neutral foundation in the appropriate brightness level and see which one disappears into your skin. I may try this on my family member, who I think is neutral, too. Funny, though, I’m a cool.

I can’t ever figure out what my undertones are. I usually just get neutral but some counters say I’m cool and some say neutral. Most of them want to put me in a cool tone because I have redness in my face from rosacea. I’ll have to try these tips out to hopefully figure it out for myself.
