The main reason is because Sacco's borrow from banks and other financial institutions on "behalf" of the members. I advise people to do due diligence before joining and committing to a Sacco

Matatu is the most unregulated industry that is based on seniority! Wazee wanapata vijana they lose!! I find it so barbaric that people are still investing in this shady venture…ask my cousin😂 the price of monopoly..something countering the Sacco is absolutely necessary so you choose what works best for your investment. Sacco is a big scam!

Thanks for the insight. The problem is the people who do not understand the Sacco model. When You join a Sacco, you buy shares and become a member and we don't have 'superior members or other owners'. People join Saccos but they forget to determine their ownership. They hence operate outside the recommended model. We need a regulator like SASRA to bring sanity in this area.

Great insights...I was told a similar story about how how lucrative it is to invest matatu business in Unique Sacco. But after talking with one of the drivers, I was able to note the issue of your vehicle making less trips per than expected. Now today I have learnt that Sacco owners are given the first priority over new members.

Patrick what you are saying is true but hakuna "SACCO,s" it only limited Companies with directors who exploit other incoming business investors. A serious loophole.Michuki intended to have Real SACCOS that operate with members interests but not anymore. Imagine even the route money we pay for each trip goes into their pockets. Even the joining fees goes to the directors. Very hurting. Parliament should do something. Very serious

Baba yangu mdogo a former invsetor in the industry alinishow unless SACCO ni yako or ya mbogi yako na wewe ni director kindly avoid .Na ata hapo ukiwa na ownership rights kwa SACCO you are liable to losses incase of accidents and heavy fines accrued on behalf of the SACCO. Again after 2 or 3 years your vehicle has aged na imekula mileage kweli kweli. The SACCO management now wants you to bring a replacement vehicle since kwa matatu industry watu humove na number plates. Ukishindwa unakuwa relegated to 'smaller' routes na after another 2 years your vehicle is retired from the SACCO altogether uipeleke town service. Alinishow usiporudisha investment capital na faida within 2 years hutawai rudisha tena. All in all matatu business is a very good business venture to big players who own SACCOS with vehicles above 5.

Some of the things you have brought up here are valid but others are not, in unique the sacco belongs to all members, meaning that you will get dividends at the end of the year, also the running of the sacco is done by this sacco, but as a new member today these challenges will definitely be an issue kwanza after COVID.

I meant the running of the sacco is done by members so the directors are members who vie for the posts and get elected. This way sacco haiwezi finya sana members it's upon them to decide what goes and what does not. Most of Meru matatu saccos are actually companies not saccos, so you join and realize you will never get any benefits by being a member.
