The Panama Canal is an artificial 82 km waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. One of the most important conduits for maritime transportation, the Panama Canal is a vital shortcut for ships as it greatly reduces the time for ships to travel between the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. It is considered one of the most difficult, and yet the most amazing engineering projects ever undertaken. Panama got the Canal handed back in 1999, after a process that was set to hand back the Canal to Panama as now it bears its name.
This maritime passage is a crucial infrastructure for Panama's economic resources since it contributes 10% of the country's income through the revenues it generates. In the same context, passing through this maritime shortcut is logically not free : Passages fees can range from 10 000 dollars for the smallest ships to 300 000 dollars for the biggest containerships. During the peak season, prices can climb significantly, to the point where certain slots are auctioned off by the port’s administration. Recently, a chemical tanker paid 2.4 million dollars to be allowed to pass ahead of everyone else.
So, what threatens this mesmerizing piece of engineering ?
To answer such question, we need to dive into the history of the Canal’s construction : The engineers didn’t clear all the land to build this maritime conduit. Instead, they leveled the road before flooding it with two artificial lakes (Lake Gatton and Lake Alajuela) that are irrigated by inland rivers.
And so, to travel through this road, a lock system is put in place to raise and lower the ships. Although it is an engineering masterpiece, this system comes with a costly price : Between 200 000 to 250 000 million liters of fresh water from the canal are lost to the ocean each time a ship passes through the Canal. Therefore, its is not a problem when rainfall is good. But from 2016, Panama is currently facing a new episode of drought, a situation that is worsening because of the global warming.
Since 2019, the level of water is so low that the authorities have taken a number of measures of precaution, which consists of :
The tonnage of boats is reduced so as to not make the ship sink to the bottom of the Canal.
The number of ships passing each day is being reduced from 40 to 32. As a result, there are longer queues at the gate of the seaway. (Ships waiting time can go up to 20 days)
During mid-September, the Canal administrator Ricaurte Vasquez said that another source of supply is necessary. The potential solution is the creation of a new water reservoir that sits at the west of the canal, which will be made up of water from the Indio River. This reservoir that yet needs to see the light, would feed the main artificial lake Gatun via an eight kilometers tunnel.
Although these new developments still needs to be consolidated, approved and financed before they become a reality, when they see the light of the day, these developments will drastically save the water shortage issue.
