Ο χαρακτηρισμός «μοναδικό/ή» είναι πάντα επικίνδυνος, καθώς συχνά αποδεικνύεται ότι υπάρχει κάτι άλλο που λιγότερο ή περισσότερο τον διαψεύδει, καθιστώντας τον υπερβολή ή και ανακρίβεια.
Στην περίπτωση του Κουρνά, όμως, έχει φροντίσει η ίδια η γεωγραφία της Κρήτης να εξασφαλίσει τον τίτλο της μοναδικής φυσικής λίμνης του νησιού με γλυκό νερό. Ίσως είναι κάτι που προξενεί εντύπωση για έναν τόπο με τέτοια έκταση, αλλά λόγω θέσης, πλάτους και καιρικών φαινομένων είναι αλήθεια ότι η Κρήτη διαθέτει περιορισμένους υδάτινους πόρους. Έτσι, αν και εντοπίζονται διάφορες μικρότερες λίμνες εδώ κι εκεί, είναι άλλοτε τεχνητές κι άλλοτε με υφάλμυρα ύδατα, αφήνοντας τον Κουρνά να δεσπόζει.
Άλλωστε, πέρα από τον φυσικό σχηματισμό και το γλυκό νερό, η συγκεκριμένη λίμνη έχει την τύχη να διαθέτει και μια μαγευτική λευκή αμμουδιά, η οποία εντυπωσιάζει σταθερά όσους φτάνουν στην περιοχή τα καλοκαίρια -δεν είναι πολλοί, ο Κουρνάς και η λίμνη του παραμένουν σχετικά άγνωστο μέρος. Σε συνδυασμό δε με το γεγονός ότι οι ακτές του Λιβυκού Πελάγους βρίσκονται μόλις 2,5 χιλιόμετρα προς τα νότια, δημιουργείται μια «θαλασσινή» αίσθηση, παρότι ο τόπος εδώ είναι ορεινός.

The "unique" characterization is always dangerous, as it often turns out that there is something else that more or less contradicts it, making it an exaggeration or even an inaccuracy.
In the case of Kournas, however, the geography of Crete itself has taken care of securing the title of the island's only natural lake with fresh water. Perhaps it is something that creates an impression for a place with such an area, but due to location, width and weather phenomena it is true that Crete has limited water resources. . Thus, although various smaller lakes are found here and there, they are sometimes artificial and sometimes with brackish water, leaving Kournas to dominate.
After all, in addition to the natural formation and the fresh water, this particular lake is also lucky to have a magnificent white sandy beach, which consistently impresses those who arrive in the area in the summer - there are not many of them, Kournas and its lake remain relatively unknown part. Combined with the fact that the shores of the Libyan Sea are only 2.5 kilometers to the south, a "marine" feeling is created, even though the place here is mountainous.
