A few weeks ago Deryk Glass, Taki Haywood and I decided to start a project that would push us a little outside our normal KZbin / Modeling comfort zone and allow the other two to select a project for the third.
I built this HO Scale Accurail 4750 Covered Hopper kit in the previous video and this shows me weathering it with Pan Pastels.
Find Deryks and Takis projects on their KZbin Channels -
Deryk - / dglass77
Taki - / shawt228
Pan Pastels and the Accurail Kit can be found at:

That was truly impressive! I've been weathering since about 1986, and have used several methods, but never Pan Pastels. It looks great, especially knowing that you only used ONE medium!! Part of me really wants to say, a couple of dots of oil paint, smeared downward with a brush dipped in turpentine - would practically *finish* this car.... But I'm fully aware that the purpose of this video was purely to demonstrate how Pan Pastels work, and how easy they are to use. Well you sure did that! This old fart is impressed. If I can ever get ahead...... I WILL try this!! Thanks. Carmine 🚂

Unrelated..... But I'm fearful of the future, looking at some of the awful spelling and grammar in some of the comments in this, and many other videos lately. Just sad....

A great video! I would make one suggestion wear gloves. if you look at 5:21 you can see 2 fingerprints above the C and A. The smallest amount of oil from your fingers will leave prints when working with Pen Pastels or normal weathering chalk.

Yep, I made the same mistake before. Was weathering a 4 bay hopper and wasn't using gloves. Now there is a huge thumbprint on it from where my thumb was.

Your work is very impressive and I'll try to emulate it. Weathering does look better than the new.

Looks great! Hope the pan pastels don't wear off with handling though. If they don't, then this could be a winner! Thanks for the demo.

You can always hit it with some dullcoat afterwards to seal it in place.

For trucks, wheels, freight car bodies and locos to add rust I use REAL rust. I take a roll of fine steel wool and put it into a quart jar and fill it up with white vinegar and set it on a window sill so the sun can shine on it. After a month or two, I pour the liquid out into a stainless photo tray from my darkroom (10X14). After it is completely dry I use a single edged razor blade scraper and scrape the rust out of the tray. It usually comes out as a fine powder. I then store it in a snuff container. Depending on how long you leave the steel wool in the vinegar my batches come out with different colors of rust, i.e., some are orange and others are a deeper colored red. When I get ready to use it I put several scoops of my rust into a plastic communion cup (neat little cups for mixing paints) and add some alcohol, Elemer's white glue and a dab of water soluble glycerin. Then I just brush it on. If I want an area where the rust has eaten through the metal (plastic) I use my X-acto knife and make some gouges in the sides of a car and fill it up with my rust. To seal the rust I usually topcoat it with a flat acrylic clear coat. It looks very realistic 'cause it is REAL rust! Happy Railroading! Never heard of pan pastels. Looks like they adhear better than normal pastel chalks but that'sjust my assumption from observation. What's the real difference between the two?

Do you dull coat first so the pastels stick better or is it not necessary ?

I was wondering the same thing. What about afterwards? Do you spray anything to seal it - concerns with damaging a fine weathering job - or leave it be?

What are the colors you most frequently use? It looks like the pastels adhere better than chalks.

Do I really see a 1969 built date on that car? I wonder why Accurail didn't pick one of the correct IC or ICG cars for that model.

Steve (?), Great video and very informative as to technique and attention to spots on the car I never considered weathering. Only question I have is what shades pan pastels were you using on the car? I am just now ordering some after seeing a test project on the MR website where they used 3 types of weathering 'chalks' and pan pastels was the overall best since it does not dissolve or wash away when coated with dull coat. I'll be watching for your response. Thanks again for a great video.

Is there a way to keep the pastels from rubbing off when you pick them up? Or is that a problem at all when using these applicators?

I did give it a dullcote when I was done. Normally if you add a dullcote over pastels that you grind yourself, alot of the work goes away. Nothing was lost with the dullcote and pan pastels

I ordered materials from at the website you provided. Do you seal the weathering with dull coat?
@MidwestModelRR
@MidwestModelRR 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, your order will go out tomorrow, and yes I use dull coat when all said and done to seal it. If I am going to add graffiti decals, I will use a gloss coat, then graffiti, then a dull coat. More often than not, I just use the Matte spray you can get from the local hardware store, you get a full size can for less than a bottle of the testors dulcote
