Thank you for browsing Labony Kitchen. In this video today, I am showing you how to grow #puishak in a little space. Malabar spinach will grow well in a variety of soil conditions but prefers a moist fertile soil with plenty of organic matter and a soil pH of between 6.5 and 6.8. Malabar spinach plants can be grown in part shade, which increases the leaf size, but it much prefers hot, humid and full sun exposures.
Malabar spinach (Basella rubra) is not spinach but rather a fast-growing vine with glossy, edible leaves. It grows quickly from seed and thrives in warm summer weather long after traditional spinach plants have bolted and gone to seed. In warm climates, it's a perennial, producing leaves, seeds and berries. Malabar spinach comes in two varieties, pale green and red stemmed. Both taste of lemon and pepper when raw; when lightly cooked, they taste more like regular spinach. Malabar spinach can grow up to 10 feet high in one season and needs plenty of room and a strong support.
Malabar spinach is easily grown from the small rounded seeds. This warm season vegetable is very frost sensitive and should not be planted outdoors until a few weeks after all danger of frost has passed. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Seeds should germinate in 10 days to 3 weeks.
They may be eaten raw in salads, boiled, steamed, stir-fried, or added to soups, stews, tofu dishes, and curries. ... Since red-stemmed Malabar spinach can lose a lot of its red color when cooked, perhaps it is best utilized (visually speaking) in raw dishes.
