I'd make sure to do all the trap adjustments after waxing or dipping the traps. A waxed trap will have way less pan tension than a brand new unwaxed trap.

I just filed it a bit to smooth it out from the vice. The vise crimps it a little and makes it bumpy, so filing a little helps smooth it out.

He used vice to bend the dog, then filed to remove the burs made by the vice. I prefer to file the bevel at the very end of the dog instead of bending it.

Do you bent the dog down for less pressure and bent it down for more

Up for more down for less. To be honest sometimes its annoying using this method, since your putting the trap in the vice and hitting the dog, and it's sometimes tricky to get more tension with this method. It is possible but its tricky and it may kinda scrape up your dog. I also found somtimes it bends it in more of a "U" shape and doesn't increase the tension much if at all.

I found it easier to decrease the tension then to increase with this method.

This is not the way to do this. The dog is what holds the jaw at its proper height. Bending the dog changes that location. To achieve pan tension adjustment without tampering with jaw height, I suggest watching "Coyote Trapping School" MB 550 Pan Tension Adjustment.
