THANK YOU!! I have a NC-HS1000 and experienced exactly the same problem. Your video gave me the knowledge and confidence to try a repair it myself - and it worked!

I like the bit where you suddenly realise there’s a metal end on that screwdriver!

Oh yes, that's a neon screwdriver, not ideal for tapping live PCBs.

Awkward spot to get to, and easy to miss. Nice work.

Well done, didnt take long to find that fault 😀 I could see quite a few cracked ring solder joints, must be from vibration of the components.

I think the head drum vibration, small though it is, causes this cracking to the through-hole components and connectors.

Interesting. I once had an Akai machine with a very similar symptom to this. Picture started to gradually deteriorate when the machine had been running for a while. I took it back to the shop under warranty twice, and on both occasions they returned it having done no more than clean the heads. They obviously never tested it for long enough for the fault to develop. On the third return with the same fault, I requested a full refund, which they gave me. Never found out what the actual cause of the fault was, and I'm sure that machine would have been re-sold to some other unsuspecting person.

I had a new JVC Super-VHS machine like that. They never got to the bottom of it and I replaced it with a Panasonic NV-FS88 which I still have.

I'm not the only one who recorded Arte testcard on purpose.

I wondered who would be first to spot that. It was received using a BSB satellite receiver which had been modified to D2MAC.

Nice fault-finding! Initially, my money was on one of those ceramic thick-film 'hybrid IC's' with the leaky SMD caps on them. I don't know if the AG/ HS range used any of those? They were problematic in the FS range of S-VHS 'prosumer' machines. Usually by that stage they were already getting a bit long-in-the-tooth, anyway..

NV-HS100/200 etc. Yes I've had to write off one of those for mass capacitor failure. The AG-4700 / HS1000 are a bit newer and seem to have less capacitor trouble.

Ohh arte in D2MAC, that's rare. I think that ran on 13°East for a while in the 1990s.

I hoped someone would notice that! Yes, it was recorded from a modified BSB receiver and a motorised dish.
