I have never taken apart a video head drum, so it's very interesting to see how they are put together, and to see what the rotary transformers look like.

I've tried this a # of times, it works: play a tape and hold a piece of solder agent the head. Cleans it every time without damage. I first tried this on a head I couldn't unclog, in playing around I to attempted to cut the solder in half. No damage to the solder, and to my amazement the head was cleaned. This sounds bizarre but it works.

Well done! I didn’t had such luck with my old Blaupunkt RTV211 (NV-333), the glue that been used to hold the wires on the rotary transformer (the stationary half), became corrosive and ate the windings all the way. Excellent job on this one, take care. Best Regards, Moshe.

I remember the NV333, I serviced and sold several of them in the day. A pretty heavy lump but they had a certain charm. I think at that point though Panasonic were a couple of years behind the curve of video technology. Compared to a Sanyo VTC5000 / VTC5150, the NV333 had a over-complicated deck.

I wish i could watch this video 8 years ago when i got HS1000 VTR which has the same symptoms. Noone was able to fix that machine, the heads were considered in a good working order. The technician called this fault "the floating fault", as he couldn't figure out what's wrong with the VTR. I had to get rid of it as it was considered as unrepairable. I wish i knew...;)

@@Capturing-Memories There were extra slots for more windings on the transformer. So Panasonic must have considered the possibility of there being more heads at some point. That leaves us wondering what miracles might have been awaiting further heads. Maybe PCM digital audio like Hi8.

Actually I got exactly the same issue. But it manifested in a final shutdown of the machine after some minutes of playback. It turned out the issue was missing lubricant on the head drum's shaft. So I just removed the earthing above the head drum (one skrew). The the whole drum can be easily removed. After that I put one drop of MoS2 into the hole of the shaft and inserted the Drum again. After this procedure the faulty behaviour was gone entirely.

It appears that this is also common on the head amplification board connectors inside the shielding as well on a few units and gets overlooked.

After so much advance circuitry One thing the VCR Technology was lacking now looking back. This was to include a total number of hours used bit like a projector because now we can’t work out on the high end units how much they have been used.

This was a common feature on professional video recorders such as Betacam but lacking in domestic and even semi-pro machines.

Beta cam meaning Beta Max which had a limited market to begin with and died like the HD discs compared to Blu-ray. But thanks for sharing. I have been repairing the Panasonics for some time since the days they had timing belts. Super Drive was the best and reduced the belts but the auto head cleaning was also a scam, it ended up damaging the head tips if not removed on time.

Reminiscent of the fault on JVC and some Hitachi. PG coupling capacitor on the lower drum fails causing head switching to go out of phase.

Dy joint eh? Not that old chestnut! My money was on some pesky SMD cap mounted onto one of those ceramic thick-film units. They seem to plague the pro-sumer Panny's (FS88/90/100/200 etc)..although I wasn't sure if this has any of those. Interesting the head didn't need much in the way of setting up when replaced. I recall a long while back removing the head from a Philips machine (just out of curiosity) - little did I realise you needed a special Philips remote to set it back up, again. Doh!

When I got my hs-1000 a few years ago it worked fine. I stashed it in the basement for another couple of years and when I tried it a year ago I got lines everywhere. Ordered a new upper head drum and replaced the old one. Problem still not solved. The paus picture is great if I move the paused picture a few frames. What can be wrong?

One in a million i suppose, but i would be checking the other machine for that connector fault, although i know it would be perfect solder joints lol. (Sods law). I don't know why they did this, but they put a plastic flap over the top of the power supply blocking the vent holes. Panasonic machines NV-HS960, NV-HS1000, AG-4700, basically any model with a TBC serviced are quite sought after. Demonstrably working, archive and format transfer companies snap them up.

Did the machine work fine after fixing the solder joints? I've got to test this in the NV-HS1000 I got here, it has a similar sort of head clog issue especially when rewinding, though not quite as bad as this one. Been trying to figure out what's wrong for a while, already replaced some bad power supply caps but it didn't fix it of course (but needed to be done in any case), really confusing issue. On mine it's worse on tapes with a weaker rf signal output.

The repaired solder joint drum went back into the machine with the bad clutch. I'm 100% sure it's fixed, but I'm not working on that machine again until I can source a good clutch.

@@video99couk So I checked on the NV-HS1000 I got here, and it also had a clearly bad solder joint on the same pin as yours. (Even though it's the older revision with a slightly different drum assembly). Re-flowing/soldering the joint did seem to help a bit, didn't notice it randomly acting clogged. Still having some issues when seeking backwards though that may be something else. I need to check alignment and clean etc to check properly though. Of course the cable connector for the drum motor cracked in the process.. argh.
@analogvideochannel4612
@analogvideochannel4612 4 жыл бұрын
Ok, let us know if/when you do check. I still had issues on mine, but swapping in the drum assembly from a AG5700 (same drum as on the FS88/FS200) solved it. I don't have an exact replacement drum assembly so I can't check just the upper drum to see if the heads on mine are bad too (thogh the hi-fi heads seem to work perfectly at least), or if there are more things wrong in the lower assembly related to the bad joints. Also had some bad PS caps, but probably not directly related.

It will require proper investigation and repair. It's likely a capacitor failure somewhere, but there could be multiple capacitors at fault.

Has the HS1000 ever had this video head like this AG4700. I am asking because I bought HS1000 and it has that VXP1747, not like most VEH0651. It's mean someone changed her before? Is it possible that he left the factory with this one (VXP1747)?
@video99couk
@video99couk 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the HS1000 has the same heads as the AG4700, so the different numbers is likely to be a change during manufacture for some reason. By the way, I have another video due out in a few days on these video heads, so subscribe to catch that.
@Kilian_546i
@Kilian_546i 2 жыл бұрын
Not only numbers are different. These video drums look different from the outside, the VXP1747 has a kind of spline on top, while the VEH0651 is flat. Anyway, thank you very much for your reply. I was afraid that someone change this video drum and that (incompatible drum) is a reason of blinking (disappearing for a few seconds every few seconds) picture issue. After resoldering two pins on connector coming to the video amplifier the image no longer disappears during playback. Unfortunately, now it is completely invisible (black screen) when pause is turned on. Could this still be video head related or should I start looking elsewhere?

Very helpful, thank you. Have you ever had a wobbly drum? I just bought a hs1000 and the drum makes a loud noise during playback, and if you inspect it, you can make it wobble slightly. I’m wondering if there is something loose or if the bearings around the shaft are damaged
@video99couk
@video99couk 4 жыл бұрын
Oh dear, sounds like bearings have failed. Since upper head drum failure is much more common than lower drum failure on these models, there are a fair amount of scrap machines out there that you could salvage a lower drum from. That would be easier than trying to replace the bearings.
