A lot of guys post camera tests on KZbin. 99% of them stay behind their desk or may be around there garden. As far as I know you are the only one who tests cameras in the worst conditions, with passion and professionalism. Warm congratulations and thanks. Concerning the G9, it made me change my mind. I used to buy FF. Currently for several reasons I use a GX8. But my next buy will certainly be this G9.

You should know that the shutter button sensitivity is adjustable in the menus. It has an option to have half-button release on or off. Turn it off and you have a normal shutter button.

Exactly, I shoot the long lenses with G9 and I keep it in burst mode all the time. The hair-trigger shutter, allows for super fast and smooth bursting without any jerk of the camera. Takes some getting use-to, and with Back Button focus, the hair trigger is a great tool to have.

This video demonstrates why I came to this channel years back. G9 is really a mighty camera! It can shoot both stills and videos very well. It is a bit heavy for a m43 camera but will balance well with your heavier lenses. However, one thing I find frustrating is the autofocus in video mode. The focus will hunt around even when just I sit or stand still. I learnt to manual focus though so it is not that big of a problem right now. I really love the camera and feel like it is a perfect fit for me! I just did a review on my channel as well.

What I really like so far about the G9 (especially compared to the Olympus em-5 & em-1): no (or limited) blackout + direct access through dials to the AF & drive modes, dedicated iso, wb, etc buttons. In other words, I don’t have any more memory issues when picking the G9... I'm in love with the ergonomic of this camera. Cheers from Montréal, where we do have the snow, but those magnificent mountains!

A nicely produced and informative video. Considering a G9 to back up my GH5 and to use as a stills camera. There are pros and cons to MFT, but I also have full frame cameras and unless I really need wall sized prints or I'm shooting over 3200 ISO my hand will always reach for the GH5. If I need even bigger prints I default to my antique 5x4 Linhof and get my hands wet! Unlike some respondents, I don't have tracking or autofocus problems with the GH5: it's a simple fix and I'm surprised that Panasonic haven't dealt with it in firmware. Lovely pictures by Joe Desjardins, by the way.

I would love to see the low light. You guys may have sold me on this because it has so much appeal in terms of size (for travel) and lens selection. I am between this and the a7iii. There is just a dearth of lens selection for the alphas and the size of the alphas is great but the FF glass is still huge. I love the look of the om-d e-m1 mkii, but this seems so feature-rich for the price. DECISIONS!!

This camera is getting more popular with video shooters and I wish you'd did a bit more on the video side of things. For example the AutoFocus in video is from what I've seen head and shoulders above the GH5 cameras especially tracking. Couple that with the superb IBIS and the Cinelike profiles for just a hair over £1000 on eBay NEW and it sounds like a great deal. My one small gripe about Panasonic is, I do wish the lenses were cheaper. I know for a professional photographer the price of these lenses aren't that big a deal but for us mere mortals although excellent they still are a little pricey. I'm talking about the mark 2 lenses that you can use the dual image stabilization with. I'm not a professional photographer but I am a keen film maker and £600 for a lens is a big pull out for me.

Hi Chris, I enjoy your commentary on G9. I would like your opinion on using the OIS. Specifically, do you believe OIS should be switched off when using a tripod? I hear many claims that OIS should be switched off, but I cannot find a reliable reason for that, or if it really applies to the Lumix/Leica OIS lenses. Is the rule different for stills vs video? Keep up the good work!
@neonbirding26803 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. IME using the G9 as my main camera for over 3 years, it all depends on what you're trying to capture and how you plan to do it. With super-tele shooting 4K video anything over 280mm should be mounted on mono or tripod for usable 4K. And having DUAL IS2 on with in-camera Digital Stabilization on is a must if you're touching the lens and camera to pan and zoom while filming anything using the Ex Tele Con feature shooting over 300mm. As for photo, you can turn it off or leave it on while snapping single shots. Nevertheless, most of this is impacted by the skills and techniques of the photographer. Thus, with Lumix G9 the DUAL IS2 can be used while on a tripod. HOWEVER, if you're going to shoot long exposures or use the HighResolution feature of G9, it's best to turn the DUAL IS2 off while shooting on the tripod. For example, Long exposure night shots using fast primes like 15mm f/1.7 for milky way night sky landscape panoramas, where 10 to 13 sec exposures are being shot for auto stitch. Also, when shooting any time-lapse sequences while static or on a slider. The Dual IS is best turned off to eliminate the drifting/shifting of subject in the final video playback. So, as you can see, there are many types of shooting conditions using the Lumix G9, with various exposures and lenses, with various camera features. So to really understand and know the limits of Lumix G9's capabilities, is one of trial and error in various conditions, using various features. Hope you find this helpful.

I really like where Panasonic is going with there G Camera line MFT camera system. From the Gh4 or 5, the G9 for stills , and now the GH5s with it's low light capabilities gives great versatility on a grand scale. What I think we all want to see now is a line of new "FAST PRIME LENSES" in the f1.0 range that are small, light, weather sealed, portable, and most of all affordable :)

Great hands on, your videos are always well balanced and are never just gushing over the latest tech. The G9 looks like an excellent camera, I love what Panasonic are doing at the moment. I'm just moving from a Fuji X-T20 to a G80, so perhaps a G9 could come my way when the price drops! The ergonomics on the Panasonic G80/G85, GH5 and now G9 are excellent if a little boring. The look of the Fuji cameras is great but for me the handling just isn't there. Putting a 18-135 on a X-T20 was awful. It handled well when I had a 35 f2 but anything much larger just wasn't comfortable. That and the fact that the G80 has IBIS and weather sealing made the switch easy.

Guys you don't understand! This is the budget GH5 we have all been waiting for. Panasonic made this camera for video, not photo. For photo, they will be releasing their Full Frame line this year. It's obv it's a photo camera first with capable video features for enthusiasts since video is limited to 10 and 30 min for 4k60 and 4k30 respectively and since they skimped out on other shooting modes and professional video features. The heat sink and build design is made to support high burst rates for photos instead of dissipating heat during hot 4k video recording so no I don't agree with you.

Good video, thanks a lot. I was hoping you were going to assess the autofocus and tracking for some birds in flight. The only reason I would change my EM1.2 for a G9 is if it is significantly better for birds and insects in flight. Mind you, if it comes close to my D500 for BIF I might change that and keep my EM1.2. The weight saving would be worth it for me - the PanaLeica 100 - 400mm is so much lighter than my Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6.

I own GH5 and G9. I like G9. 2 minor complaints: G9 shutter button is toooooo sensitive. I am shooting too many shots accidentally .. turning on or off the power button and when I am trying to 1/2 press shutter to focus. I also do not like shooting mode dial on left side. I like it to be on the right side (I am right handed) like GH5 so I can hold the lens / camera with left hand and adjust the control dial while holding grip with right hand.

I am very interested in the burst viewfinder experience of the G9 versus the Olympus M1.2 for mechanical shutter high speed burst in the 9 to 12 fps speed range for shooting runners, soccer players, and skateboarders. What was said about the G9 shaky viewfinder experience bothers me. I don't just want good results. I want an enjoyable shooting experience. I am a tactile person who cares about how the knobs look and work and how the camera feels and looks in operation. Which camera has the better experience? Does the viewfinder black out? Is the viewfinder more or less of a live view experience? Does the viewfinder show the current focus point group or focus point used positions? My Olympus M1.1 at 9 fps mechanical shutter shows the last picture taken, without indicating the location of the focus point. I would prefer more of a live few experience with visible focus points.

I have owned the GH5, GH5s, Fuji X-T3...and I have not been able to bring myself to selling the G9. The stabilization coupled with the profiles like Cinelike D let you produce video as good as or better than anything out there. I learned through experience that selling points like 8 bit/10 bit 4:2:2 4:2:0 and all those crazy bitrates (e.g., 400Mpbs) are all marketing tricks. I couldn't tell the difference between them. Except for when the footage is supersmooth handheld, I know that footage came out of the G9. So yes - at the current price - it's a spectacular camera. For stills, stay below 3200 ISO and it's as good as anything out there.

I am a bit skeptical about your positive bias regarding the G9 performance, especially as you are essentially stating it can compete with a pro DSLR like a Canon 1DX. As a user of Panasonic cameras lenses for several years I know the pitfalls, one of the main ones being the AF speed and accuracy. I have simply missed wildlife shots (small erratic moving birds) using my G80/85 & the Pana 100-300mm lens. At one point I could not get the camera to focus on a bird perched on a branch even in good lighting (which was to my back). It was so frustrating! I do like using my G80 most of the time even more than my Nikon DSLR but my D600 still keeps churning out great images and I trust the AF to nail the shot, which it does.
