We all make mistakes and things go wrong. Very impressed with your turn around and determination to test the crap out of AF settings. I'm sure it'll pay dividends. This was perfect...got the GH5S with new firmware and these settings make it ALMOST as fast as my DPAF on my C100...not quite as fast but I can run and gun on the gimbal with AF doing an awesome job, Cheers!

Thanks man. Somehow I managed to have continuous AF shut off completely in that focus submenu. I have been trying to figure out that one for hours. Got it up and working now.

Hey Timothy, thanks for the tip and the extensive effort you have put into this. I have tried your settings and although focus is kept most of the time on the subject (at the center of the cross) there is a lot of "breathing" in the background, so much that it is very distracting. This is with default autofucus, I have not tried to change the autofucus settings yet.

what would you do to make the autofocus focus faster, because from what I have seen ...it's slow/lags, or is the GH5 just not capable of focusing faster? what about face tracking, did that work for you? The pulling back and forth focusing is a killer. And yes it's a great camera, a lot of KZbinrs are using it but they go into manual and set the focus to get around it's weakness ...thank you maybe the GH6? And no I'm not interested in shelling big $$$$ for the way it is now. Good review and work. I know it had to be exhausting

How has AF improved with the firmware updates, if Panasonic released any yet ? I'm considering upgrading from my current camera, which I've been using for 6 years now (Canon EOS 550D) to the GH4 or this one.

If AF is important to you then this isn't the camera for you. I actually just switched to the Canon 1DX Mkii if that tells you anything. (Video coming soon)

I bought the GH5 the 29th of December, AF isn't the most important thing for me, I mean it is an important thing compared to the EOS 550D which didn't have it at all during video recording (continuous), but I don't really care about how fast it does it as long as I do unboxing and other simple videos and for complex and "serious" videos, I'd always use manual focus as usual (after all manual focus is what everyone uses in Cinematography). As for using it, I'm having a great time, I bought it with a 42.5mm lens, I still need an EFS-MFT adapter to use all of my lenses, but the 42.5mm is a pretty good lens nonetheless to begin using a camera with (despite it's very zoomed in and I have to put the camera very far from the thing I'm recording), I'd have bought the A7S II if it didn't cost almost the double, but I preferred the GH5 for the flippable display, which helps me A LOT when I shoot videos of myself alone, instead of plugging it in my tablet to check on DSLR Controller as I used to do with my 550D which doesn't have a flippable display.

Thanks for sharing. What dial setting are you using? I have the same lens and auto focus only works with the dial set to IA, even though I have the AFC or AFS set and auto focus turned on in the menus and lens.

I think it could have been the continue auto focus I turned that off and it no longer makes any sound.

+Bayless_TV I haven't tried these on the G85 but I would say they are VERY different cameras and no where near the same. The settings I have been using on the g85 have been really good. Mostly built around tracking focus points.

Hmm, the settings are as fine as they get and you've chosen a challenging enviroment for the AE (I suppose), but still the AF ist constantly hunting for focus in the background. Take a look at the white windowframe around 04:10. Around 04:45, when you say that you want to be in focus, not the wall behind you, the Gh5 jumps to the wall an then back to your face. At 06:14 the AF decides, that the sign right of your head might be interesting and jumps to that. I noticed that the darker the overall exposure is, the wors the Gh5 behaves with the (contrast based) AF. Maybe the background hunting will settle a bit, when you consider to enable the AF custom settings (08:55) to lower sensitivity. Some videos also recommend higher speed. I switched to a mix of AF and when I am in focus, use AF Lock to prevent that nasty pumping and then finetune with peaking on (low setting). After all panasonic has still some homework to do. I don't have a 4K Camera. I have a simple Canon 80D and it doesn't put you through all this. it just knows where to focus. It sees a face, it focuses on the face. The face moves, the focus moves with the face, straight out of the box.

Well, there are some settings on the Canon 80D as well but Canon is known as having one of the best AF systems out there. There are plusses to the 80D but the GH5 has SO MANY more features in a much smaller package. Pros & Cons of each

Canon's autofocus system is awesome. Too bad they have lagged so bad on camera innovation and 4k. I've been waiting for years to get the results I get from this GH5(I just crossed over, because I was tired of waiting for a real 4k canon)

It's getting better actually. At 60FPS and Single Focus Point mode I've had even better success and it is pretty much nailing it.

I have little to no autofocus problems. Nothing more than I had with my Nikon cameras in the past anyway. No one camera is going to lock focus and never drift a little or refocus on a moving subject unless you are filming snails and turtles racing. People are also holding these cameras up to their faces like they are taking goddamn selfies. If you take a picture of a landscape or a portrait its on a tripod correct? Then why would someone think they can hold a camera perfectly steady in while walking or moving around and it is going to maintain perfect focus?
