They're a nice handset, main base plugs into phone line other 2 only need power receives signal from the base. Voice callerID, easy to use, plenty of features and they last forever. Had the white version 12+ years prior to this black set and found out after purchasing the black set wasn't the phone having an issue but the phone service so the white set is still functioning properly and they're basically the same model. Can't go wrong with them in my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Do the 2nd and 3rd handset bases also need to plug into a phone jack, or just the main base that has the answering machine?

Only the main base plugs into phone line. 2nd-3rd power only.

What does it mean when the phone says link. Do I need to adjust something???

you would have to check your user manual to be sure, if its first time set up follow the instructions. If it's not a first time set up and it just says link i would check user manual under troubleshooting, there are a few different possibilities. Such as No Link to base, Link to Cell, No Line, etc. Sorry cant be of more assistance than that.
