This is a great little lens. I bought mine used, too. It's great for portraits and interviews, products, street work, and travel. Best of all, it is TINY and SHARP. Along with the 15mm f/1.7 Leica, it is a no-brainer prime for m43.

I use this lens for portrait photography and documentary shoots. It works perfect with GH6 and GH5S. It has a power OIS system. Lumix f1.7 25MM, Lumix 1.7 42,5MM and Sigma f1.4 16MM are the most compatiple primes lenses for Lumix cameras.

Hi Shane, this was the first lens I bought after buying my first camera with the kit lens. Always brings a smile when I use it so light and bright. You mentioned that the filter is only 37mm but I can tell you that there are 37mm ND and CPL filters. Also, I bought a close-up filter at 37mm and before I had a dedicated macro lens (the Olympus 60) with the close-up filter screwed on you almost get 1:1 and with f1.7 this is very bright compared with most true macro lenses. But of course a razor razor thin focus plane as a result.

I had this lens, bought it second hand for about the same price. Unfortunately it has a lot of purple fringing in low light and I decided to replace it with the Olympus 45mm f1.8. It was a decisions I regret doing because the Olympus is not focusing close enough (I knew it was 50cm but didn't realize how far it would be compared to the Panasonic). I will get a 42.5mm as soon as I have the opportunity. I am very often thinking about that lens. I really enjoyed using it despite the issue I mentionned above.

I love the lens. I think it was my first prime. I did have some color fringing. But I use it a lot and it makes it hard for me to justify a PL 42.5 1.2 or the Olympus 45 1.2

Had this lens for years its my favourite by far! One issue i've just recently ran into though, When using the dji focus motor it very quickly runs out of grip as for the infinite focus wheel on the lens, paired with gradual fall off of sensitivity the more you twist it in one go. Anyone got any recommendations on a work around for this?

I do a lot of portrait and product (plant/nature) shots. This was my first prime after moving to m43. I have yet to find any lens to beat it. I compared it to the olympus 12-40 f2.8 pro and for 90% of the shots you couldn’t tell them apart. But the 42.5 is a fraction of the cost and weight. The olympus went back.

A minor slip I think - the light gathering ability of a 42,5mm f/1.7 lens on a MFT camera is the same as a 85mm f/3.4 lens on a Full Frame camera. Basically, for a given field of view, the light entering the camera is determined by the physical size of the aperture and 42.5/1.7 = 85/3.4.
@GeekyNerdyTechy
@GeekyNerdyTechy Жыл бұрын
That's incorrect. F1.7 is F1.7 - the look is 3.4. It's only the depth of field that will change, not the light. There's a lot of wrong information on this. I can set up both a full frame camera and MF4 with exactly the same settings in my studio and the f-stop and iso will be identical.
@RedFrameTech
@RedFrameTech Жыл бұрын
Shane is right. And you said it yourself; aperture is a physical measurement. So f1.7 on mft is f1.7 on ff. The difference lies in the depth of field at a given aperture and distance from the lens.
@kayodeolaosebikan7462
@kayodeolaosebikan7462 Жыл бұрын
F1.7 is f1.7, the same amount of light but FF usually is brighter because the individual pixel in the sensor is usually bigger than that of MFT. However 42.5mm MFT would give 85mm equipment field of view of FF.
@Stephen.Bingham
@Stephen.Bingham Жыл бұрын
@@GeekyNerdyTechy You are talking about "light" in the sense of light intensity (light power per unit area). I am talking about simply total light power entering the camera. It is the total light power entering the camera that determines the image noise. It is obviously the case that f-stop determines exposure - and this doesn't change with focal length or sensor size (That's why f-stop is useful). However, exposure is determined by light intensity at the sensor, not the total light power. Since a MFT sensor is roughly a 1/4 of the area of a full frame sensor the total light power used to create the image is 4 times smaller when the f-stop is the same. This is why for a given iso image noise is roughly two-stops worse on the smaller sensor for a given sensor technology. I hope that helped. I'm a professional research physicist, by the way. I've been employed by several governments around the world to design and build fancy optical instruments.
@Stephen.Bingham
@Stephen.Bingham Жыл бұрын
@@RedFrameTech I am using "aperture size" to refer to the physical size of the hole - measured in square mm, for example. f-stop is not the same as aperture size. For example a 300mm f/8 lens and a 30mm f/0.8 lens have the same aperture size, but obviously not the same f-stop.
