It's amazing that the old 7~14 Panasonic (that was used as far back as the GH2) still looks better than many Full Frame lenses of today. many of the other big name wides are less sharp or show purple / orange vignetting on very wide end. If you haven't got a wide at all then either of these two would be great.

Hi Rob, I have to agree with you. I think both of these lenses are really good, but in my case I prefer the 8-18mm (personal preference). Thanks for stopping by the channel.
@photogenic20107 жыл бұрын
We have wide spaces in Australia as you do in the states, so I should get me an ultra wide. your evaluation is spot on. For travel the Oly may be a bit big. I'd say the 8-18 wins for having the protective filter thread.
@YOLOnyc5 жыл бұрын
Thx for the review *The two lenses are remarkably similar* so it's kinda difficult to justify the substantial price of upgrade to the 8-18mm for minimal increase in zoom at the cost of slight loss of maximum width, and better maximum aperture at the cost of a varying aperture (although you could set the 8-18mm to f4 and it'll stay fixed there just like the 7-14mm)
@Marlon_Torres5 жыл бұрын
Hey Eric, thanks for stopping by! Some of the things I like about the 8-18mm is that you don't get that purple flare that you get in the Lumix 7-14mm, it's weather sealed, you can screw on a filter on, and it has a much more flexible range on the long end (14 vs 18mm, 8mm difference in terms of 35mm equivalent), and after using both lenses for a while I can tell you that the 8-18mm outperforms the Lumix 7-14. Also, the 8-18mm is currently $100 more than the 7-14mm brand new. Not saying the 7-14 is not good, it's good lens too, but if I were in the market for either one of these I'd go with the 8-18mm.

@Marlon_Torres6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rich! Keep in mind that the GH5 has in body image stabilization though. Having a lenses with IS like the Lumix 12-35 f/2.8 and the 12-60 plus the ibis in the GH5 gives you the dual i.s. which is nice to have, but the ibis in the gh5 alone is pretty amazing in my opinion and does a great job with lenses that don’t have i.s. I recommend you you rent the lens first and see if ibis is good enough for you.

Great video. I feel like in those examples there wasn't enough difference to justify the price. Plus I do like the wider view of the 7mm in those examples. The one test that might have shown off the 8-18 would be a lower light situation for example filming indoors without a lighting setup. I am thinking general purpose situations like bday parties, family get togethers and such.

Great review mate! Even though the 7-14 is wider, I still prefer the 8-18 as it's weather sealed and faster aperture in case you wanna shoot something indoors. Also the 8-18 allows you to use filters which the 7-14 doesnt!

Hi Marlon, great comparison video (even after several years🤣) I think one year ago I was into buying a wide-angle lens, and beside the two Panasonic lenses of your comparison I was also considering the Olympus 7-14mm; while the latter offered the benefit of constant (and for the most focal length higher) aperture, the Pana Leica offers a bigger zoom range into the "normal" focal lengths, and it allows to use conventional filter since the lens is less bulbous and does not protrude. THat is what finally gave the decisive point for the Pana Leica lens, and I enjoy using it very much. And although the optics are clear, I was still surprised to see the difference between 7mm and 8mm, the image is quite diferent, and I could imagine that in narrow space situations this may be a real advantage for the older Pana lens or for the Olympus lens; BR ERwin.
@Marlon_Torres2 жыл бұрын
Hi Erwin, thank you! There is definitely a noticeable difference between 7mm and 8mm with these lenses, but even then my go to lens was the Pana Leica when I shot m43. I loved that lens!

@GlennUpgraded7 жыл бұрын
Zumaa is there still an AF with the Oly 7-14 with the g85?
@DennisMeetsWorld4 ай бұрын
Speaking from experience, the Oly 7-14 f2.8 has horrible lens flare. Any type of light source hitting the lens (even with the built in lens hood) whether indoors or outdoors, will render ugly flare in your image. The AF would cause a weird “zoom jump” in video every time it would try to regain focus in AFC, it is very jarring and looks so unprofessional. I think it’s because it’s an Olympics lens trying to communicate with a Panasonic body (i shoot with a GH5). I sold mine because of those issues.

Whats up man, I really enjoyed this video. It was exactly what I have been looking for. My girlfriend wants to get into vloging so we got the Lumix g7 and the kit lens makes it hard to fit her face in the screen when she is holding the camera (she has short arms). We want to get a wider lens but I would also like it to have POWER O.I.S. because her videos are so shaky and I dont think the MEGA O.I.S. is cutting it. What would you recommend? I know almost nothing about cameras and lens. Thanks for any advice. I Think I like the panasonic leica 8-18 lens more but dang is it expensive.
@Evolve8166 жыл бұрын
Dang man, did you ever make a decision? I am in the same situation. I've had the G7 for 8 months now, but I'm looking for a wider lens, but that price tag is crazy expensive. I may just spend $300 and get a Rokinon wide angle. Since with a MFT, the cropping won't show as much curvature. Let me know what you guys ended up doing.

Finally! I've been waiting for someone to review the 8-18mm. There are no reviews on this lens while vlogging so thank you! Awesome video. I also have the same camera set up, I love the g85. I wanted to ask how you have your autofocus set up? I've been gathering a bunch of footage for my first video and I finally figured out how to get the autofocus fast and accurate while vlogging. What settings are you using? I have autofocus set to +2 on sensitivity, quick af on of course, 1 area select, AFC on, and the trick I found is that when you use 1 area select, make the focus box small and leave it dead center that way the contrast based af system can easily tell when the subject is moving. Most people tend to make the 1 area select box large so their whole body fits in the box, but that makes the af very inaccurate. Wondering if you use the same settings? Again thanks for the video. Subscribed and liked
@Marlon_Torres7 жыл бұрын
What's up Andrew! Thanks man, I appreciate that! I too use the same exact settings, and yes minimizing the focus box makes a huge difference. The only time I use the the Face/Eye Detection is in extremely bright settings like at the beach or something because I feel it does a great job in that type of setting. Also, when I am doing talking head shots 95% I'll shoot those in MF, but for the most part I'll stick to the 1 Select area and put the focus box in the center and keep myself framed in there. 👍🏽 Do you have the 8-18mm or are you planning on getting it? Thanks again for stopping by my channel!

Thinking about getting it, I have a 58mm wide angle adapter for the 12-60mm kit lens which does the trick for now but I want the shallow depth of field with the 8-18mm and a variable ND. @YouBDub6 жыл бұрын
67mm? Really? other places recommend to get a 82mm ND to avoid any vignetting but if you are good with 67mm, I will look into it. Also, have you tried Breakthrough Photography X4 10-Stop ND Filter? Between the Fotga and ICE, which would you prefer? and pros and cons? by the way your video about this lens really help me!
@Marlon_Torres6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's the filter size for this lens and I haven't had any issues in terms of vignetting. If there's any is minimal. I haven't tried the Breakthrough filter and between the Fotga and the ICE, I use the Fotga more because it's a variable ND filter. The ICE I use more for long exposure shots in daylight.
