Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100

This is the best all-round camera I've ever owned. I've taken it traveling, attached it to my drone, and even filmed weddings with it. The image quality for the price is amazing and having a stabilized lens is perfect for video. I have to disagree about the lens. It's what makes this camera special. No other company makes a camera with a 24-70mm equivalent fixed lens with this large of a sensor. If it had a fixed 35mm, it would be just like the Fujifilm X100 series which is a great camera, but limited to only one focal length. I wish a company would make an APS-C or full frame version of this type of camera in a small profile. It's genuinely one of a kind.

I agree with you, the lens give this unique qualities to the camera. The down side for me is the fact they stay outside and take time to open and close. Is the price to pay for such a special combination, I guess. Thanks for your interesting contribution.

@@myleicam8546 Have you tried to use the option in the menu system, that doesn't retract the lens when you turn it off, and makes it stay to a particular focal length?

Actually Canon G1x Mk2 has a APS-C sensor with a 24mm - 120mm f2-f4.0 lens.

Excellent presentation, as usual. I was mostly using my LX100 for my street interviews and head shots for my newspaper work, which it does very nicely. But, my Lumix ZS100 does everything I need, plus it fits in my pocket better...so it is with me more. As you do, if I need better quality, I use a 50 or other prime on a different camera. Finally...I love your work with the LX100. you capture more heart with it than most photographers...who spend $20K plus. The muddy childs feet resting on fathers feet is an amazing catch.

Glad to see another one of your videos. It has been a while. Without going into a whole lot of detail as to why, I sold my M9 and the last of my M-mount lenses at the beginning of the year. I am now using a Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 with three fast high quality prime lenses; the Panasonic-Leica DG Summilux 15mm f1.7, the Olympus M Zuiko ED 12mm f2.0, and the Olympus M Zuiko 17mm f1.8. The GX9 uses one of Panasonic's latest 20mp sensors and unlike that zoom lens on your LX100, my MFT lenses do not block part of the sensor. Plus my GX9 is only slightly larger than your LX100 and I don't have to deal with one of those pesky telescoping zooms and slow start-up times.

@@Ad-eq3cu Absolutely correct and since the GX9 is an ILC, that's by choice. If I wanted to, I could stick a Panasonic-Leica or Minolta 100-400mm zoom on it tomorrow and every new GX9 sold in the US comes with an excellent 12-60mm zoom. But as Hugo points out, almost every one trombones. Plus this review is a departure from Hugo's usual fare. If you follow him regularly then you will not that he usually talks about his wonderful Leica M8s and M9 and shares all of the great photos he captures with them. And Leica Ms have no zooms.

@@williamschaffel3760 Yes of course, I see your point but I had the issue where I needed image good quality, a zoom and small size and the LX100 (or D-lux 109 in the Leica equivalent) were good solutions. For fixed focal length there are many choices, I would personally then move up to APS-C size at least, e.g. Fujis, Canons etc. What I was trying to highlight is that zoom is very impressive in terms of aperture for what it is. Yes I do not like that it extends like this but it serves a purpose. All the best

At the end, this camera is a good compromise, close to a “do it all,” in a small size and low weight. The GX9 seems a excellent unique system, and with it, probably you don’t need anything more. The conversation with Ad 2 is very interesting, I enjoy reading it.

Greetings Hugo from the Principality of Wales where you get 9 months of winter followed by 3 months of bad weather lol. At last the weather has broken and the sun is out and I'm out with the cameras. Spectacular photographs Hugo I wish I had your talent. I was lucky to find on eBay at a good price a Billingham camera bag specifically made for Leica, it takes 2 M cameras and accessories and quite compact. They are only sold through Leica stores Keep your eyes open for one I can recommend it. As always great episode.

Hello Steve, yes, I had the dust issue in the lens. After that I attached a filter, hoping it can help, but im not sure. I forgot to speak about it in the video, but is something to have in count.

@@myleicam8546 Thanks Hugo, just to assure you, for me it went just the other way round ! I first bought the x100s and then became "victim" of the Leica brand. The final trigger was a visit to Leica in Wetzlar (Germany). Also your video channel informed me that there still exists an accessible way into the M-system with the famous Leica M8 ! Of course one must take in consideration the risks of used camera gear. I was lucky to find some beautiful used material in Germany. My recent purchase is a used Elmarit lens 2.8 90mm. I really appreciate the information you share with us all. TIP: if ever, you would decide to buy a used x100S, do not forget the "S" or a more recent letter. Take Care, greetings, Roger ;-)

@@tuftufclub159 Interesting path Roger, it have a lot of sense. The x100 seems a camera that invite you to go deeper into photography, as the Leica M does. Like distant sisters in some way. (The M8 and the Fuji are also very close in prices) ...And this Elmarit 2.8 90mm you recently purchase... congratulations! They are one of my favorite lenses. Ay… si es que no es cuestión de megapixeles, ni de velocidad de foco, ni de rapidez de medición… es cuestión de sensaciones, es la comunión con la máquina, que la veas y pienses… necesito hacer fotos con ella. Hace poco se abrió una discusión en un foro sobre la M8. Que las hay más rápidas, con más calidad y miden mejor? Quizá, pero yo no me siento tan a gusto con ninguna como me siento con la M8. Cuatro años de cámara y nos enseñas fotazas. El que no quiera ver de qué va esto, que siga invirtiendo en equipo… algunos ya lo hemos visto claro. ;). Cuídate y gracias por el vídeo!

Probably yes. Why not. In any case, it records only in HD, not 4k, so you don't need a extremely big SD. Thanks for comment.
