Thank you for this great review/ comparison. I have watched a few of your videos regarding these great panasonic bridge cameras and decided to go on with FZ200. it is great addition to my full frame dslr and sigma compacts. Thanks, Graham, you reassured me that I made the right choice in my choice of the FZ200 over the FZ1000. I had low light concerns and love shallow depth of field, and despite the FZ200 being an older model, its abilities to take relatively low light photos swung the deal for me. I did notice in your sample photos a bit less dynamic range between lights & darkly shadowed areas in the FZ200 and was wondering if perhaps that might be due to the custom exposure level vs. the FZ1000's default mode. By the way: thanks for an excellent series of video instruction on the FZ200. It has really helped me out a great deal. :D

Next year, there will be a comparison between the 1000 and the 2000! ;) I just got my camera a year ago and I'm very happy with it. There's noticeable improvements between it and the 1000 but not enough for me to feel the need to upgrade at this time. I've seen some beautiful shots taken with the 200. Plus i love the more compact size. I'm currently watching Graham's tutorials, to make better use of all the features. Yes I'm STILL getting to know my camera. :)

Thank you Graham, for taking your time to show us an excellent side-by-side comparison between the two cameras. I have the FZ 200 & based on your video haven't seen any compelling reason to buy the new FZ 1000. I'm surprised & a bit disappointed that Panasonic continues to ignore the geo tagging feature on the line of FZ Bridge cameras. You'd think that a camera built with such versatility would include geo tagging, for those of us that like using a Bridge camera while hiking & the wide range of different lighting situations any hike provides a photographer & their camera. BTW, I liked the video music & the color of your sweater & shirt, glad you've gotten away from the browns & grays that predominate many of your earlier videos.

I have to say thank for that. That really did help my decision. As you say, it's personal, but that confirmed my instinct from looking at previous sample images from the 200 that it just doesn't cut for me. I'm using an Olympus TCON-14B Teleconvertor and a Olympus WCON-08B Wide extension lens on the FZ1000 that I had already on for my old FZ20. Both cameras have a 62mm lens barrel, so I was happy I could use all my old filters and extensions lens. The wide extension lens gives me super wide since the FZ1000 can already do 25mm equivalent. I had made a custom tripod plate that attached to the FZ20 to support the camera with the extension lens and give full time access to battery compartment, I may be able to transfer it over to the FZ1000 with a bit of modification.

Hi Graham, I have watched several of your instructional videos on the FZ200 and found them to be both interesting and very useful. The zoom has just gone on my camera and so I wanted to see what you said about the FZ200 v FX1000. After that I was poised to opt for the FZ1000, when out of curiosity I thought I would check out the FZ200 and so watched your comparison video on that model v FZ1000. I was disappointed and surprised to find that you cited several serious shortcomings of the FZ1000 which you had not mentioned in the first video; the noise of the zoom being audible on video being of particular interest and concern to me. Thank goodness I did watch the second video before I bought the FZ1000.

Thanks for your brilliant series of videos of cameras, training, accessories and tips. Hopefully I am learning as I keep reviewing your information. I have used an FZ8 for a few years mainly to fit the travel security reasons and it is excellent. Recently I bought an FZ30 for my wife as the zoom on her Canon got damaged but she still loves that old Canon, which does take great photos,so we both use the FZ30. However I did want an upgrade and have been waiting for the anticipated new version of the FZ.200. Yes I would have liked the FZ1000 for the low level facility and reduced noise but at present could not justify the cost. So I have gone ahead with a FZ200 purchase which I am really happy with. Next year will likely see the FZ1000 purchase, I hope. I came to the Lunix cameras originally after lots of research and very grateful for your videos and guidance which I found after the initial purchase. Maybe in the future as video is increasingly important and used in cameras you could cover basic video editing, camera cards and batteries. I certainly carry quite a few new camera cards and batteries with me and never delete any cards at all Keep up the fantastic work and your infectious enthusiasm.

Thanks for the new video Graham. I could see better definition on the tombstone engraving with the FZ1000 shots. Mostly there wasn't a huge difference. I now have both cameras and there's no doubt that the FZ1000 is a faster performer than the FZ200. One query I have in regards to the comparisons. When you were showing the ISO changing at the top in the FZ200 shots was the ISO changing in the FZ1000 image at the same time? I couldn't detect a change taking place in the FZ1000 shots, which made me think that you were only changing the ISO on the FZ200. If that was the case, then I'm not sure of the point of that part of the comparison. If the ISO was changing simultaneously with both cameras then the FZ1000 is very impressive.
@GrahamHoughton1210 жыл бұрын
Hello, yes the ISO was changing in both cases. I can use the FZ1000 at ISO 3200 where the FZ200 would be very noisy at ISO 400. I'm sure with experimentation with sharpening and noise reduction and shadow control perhaps this 3 stop advantage might be extended.

Thank you for another informative, well presented video, Graham. I thought the difference between the two cameras was most evident in the top-bottom, cropped comparisons where the FZ1000 seemed to have the advantage. Interesting considering that the FZ1000 was left at default settings and the FZ200 was set to +1 sharpness and -1 noise reduction. Would the FZ1000 shine even more if it were also adjusted beyond the factory default settings? Still love my FZ200 but I am very interested in the FZ1000 and look forward to more of your videos on this camera.
@GrahamHoughton1210 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes the FZ1000 can be adjusted to provide images with greater sharpness and more dynamic range using the controls available. I left them all at factory default as a lot of users intially don't know which ones to adjust. i will do an updated video showing what the effect of the controls does.

Clearly the best comparison of the two cameras I have seen. To me, there is clearly superior detail, contrast and sharpness in the images shot with FZ1000 but I was pleasantly surprised at how well the FZ200 performed. I only wish you could have posted a few indoor, low light condition non-flash still images from both cameras, testing each camera's max zoom capabilities (i.e., FZ1000 = 16X, 400 equiv. vs. FZ200 = 24X 600 equiv.). I would then like to see an image taken on the FZ1000 that is blown up and cropped to look equal to the image size captured by the FZ200 when zoomed to its max, -- using each camera's most open F-stop (i.e., F4.0 vs. F2.8). This might be a real world indoor picture someone takes of an actor or speaker on a stage, while the photographer is in the last row of a large theater or auditorium. Or an image taken upon entering a duomo in Italy. Under the above conditions, given the differences in each camera's most open F-stop, to provide equivalency, I would also want to see the image taken by the FZ1000 to be shot at a higher ISO -- so that it could be almost equivalent to an FZ200's image shot at F2.8 at perhaps ISO 400 and ISO 800 at it's max zoom. Looking at the images you posted, I am suspecting, given the FZ1000's larger sensor, and what seems to me sharper and more detailed images, even the above scenario should produce a sharper, less noisy 5" x 7" or 8" x 10" print. Am I correct or off base? My goal is to produce primarily 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 prints, but sometimes larger images (using my Canon Pro-1 printer). I already have a DSLR (K20 Pentax) and a set of lenses. Now I am looking for a "bridge camera" to satisfy my travel needs and photographing of the insides of some of the spectacular Duomos of Italy (without flash).

Hello Graham, thanks very much for this review which was really informative. I'd like to get your advice if you don't mind. I'm currently considering three different cameras but can't decide which will be the best one for me. One of them is the Lumix FZ200 which, even though quite an old camera now, seems to be highly regarded for image quality. The other is the brand new Lumix FZ82. I can't find many reviews for this but wondered whether this is in fact any better in terms of image quality than the FZ200. The third is the Sony Cybershot HX400V. In your opinion, all other features aside, which would take the best photographs? Thank you in advance.

Yet another non partial review. I have the FX200 and in the past, I would upgrade the camera every few years to take advantage of megapixels and zoom. For me, I shoot mostly in daylight, for this upgrade and given the price of the new camera, I will hold on to my camera. If I study Graham's video's on the FZ200 my pictures will improve to the point that the upgrade will not be necessary until the next generation, the FZ5000?????? Thanks again for your videos.

I am in doubt over changing to the FZ300 of FZ1000 but since the i.zoom makes it possible to get to 800mm focal length and the fact it has a much better EVF, I feel much more attracted to the FZ1000. Hi Graham, Terrific videos you do of both the FZ200, and now FZ1000, I was just wondering if you are a fan of polarising filters on either of these cameras, and are the said filters worth purchasing? Your view would be appreciated.
@GrahamHoughton1210 жыл бұрын
hi Paul in situations where you need to cut reflections from water, foliage etc or boost sky contrast they have a place. However sometimes there is an image quality hit either optically or via reflections and ghosting affecting image contrast. I would only use as a last resort. Like fixed and variable ND filters I carry them in my bag but rarely use them!

Thanks for the informative video, Graham. I have the FZ200 and was looking at the FZ1000 for a shallower depth of field (for separating the subject from the background) and shooting under darker conditions. Only I'm a bit confused with the different sensor size. The FZ1000 lens goes guickly from f2.8 to f4 whereas the FZ200 stays at f2.8. But doesn't the larger sensor make it be able to take in more light? Does this have an advantage as far a shutter speed is concerned?

Why are red and blue colors always so difficult to capture? Today again I had poppy flowers in my lens. They turned basically orange instead of red. The other day I had problems with forgetmenots. All regardless of metering mode and focus matrix. What can cause color shifts? I applied your lesson you gave in your video on shooting the moon, but it didn't help. Is it sRGB that messes the colors up?

Hi Graham, I have watched your comparison video between the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 and the FZ200. These are my conclusions. FZ1000 wins hands down for sharpness and clarity especially at the macro end, as expected the 1" sensor allows higher ASA levels without noise compared to the FZ200. However, the FZ200 gives pictures that appear warmer with stronger red and green tones; the pictures from the FZ1000 appear cold and less appealing. For general landscape photography I prefer the more pleasing tones of the FZ200.

Hi Graham, thanks for the 1000/200 comparison review. Re. the dof hit with the larger sensor, can this be compensated for by using increasing the f number, or is the maximum f value too small in the FZ1000? This is what I typically do with my interchangeable lens camera vs my bridge camera - the diffraction problem seems to occur at a higher f value with the larger sensor. If I purchased the FZ1000 I'd mostly be videoing and still shooting with the raynox attached at near max telephoto, sometimes in low light.
@wellwellrobh8 жыл бұрын
i can now answer my own question having contacted panasonic. the maximum f value according to their webchat person is f4! therefore the fz1000 is, as graham said, totally useless for added lens macro. unfortunately, so my search continues ..............
@macvos8 жыл бұрын
The maximum f value is 8.0. The 4.0 mentioned by the webchat person is probably the maximum minimum f value of the lens. At 25mm, the f value can be set between 2.8 and 8. At 400mm the f value can be set between 4 and 8. The webchat person misunderstood your question or was misinformed about the FZ1000's capabilities.
@wellwellrobh8 жыл бұрын
thanks Marcel. For further clarification can you share with us: 1) at what lens magnification the camera shifts to allow a setting between f4-8? 2) Or are there other f ranges between 25mm and 400mm? 3) have you ever used an add on macro/close up lens, either Raynox or Canon, and subjectively how did it perform vis a vis dof?
@macvos8 жыл бұрын
No problem. I will try to answer your questions as good as I can: 1) There is a great graph available at: 3.bp.blogspot.com/-98FglaKx0Lo/U-Rv9_DxdbI/AAAAAAAAEN4/V_qSz7PQWQE/s1600/Panasonic+DMC-FZ1000+-+005+maximum+aperture.jpg 2) The minimum f number (maximum aperture) steadily increases between 25mm (2.8) and 170mm (from thereon it stays 4.0). The maximum f number (minimum aperture) is always 8.0. 3) I don't believe it is possible to use an add-on lens on the FZ1000. A teleconverter could be connected to the FZ200 if I'm not mistaken. I could be wrong on this, but I have personally never tried this or felt the need to. The FZ1000 focuses correctly from +- 3 cm distance. Using iZoom one can shoot lower resolution 800mm pictures (it is digital zoom, but without the need for larger files). These pictures are usually still good enough to use online. For absolute maximum quality macro shooting, it probably is better to used a dedicated lens though. Overall I would say this camera can be used perfectly for almost all 'normal' situations. I have shot soccer matches (standing right on the sideline), done macro shots of flowers, insects and everything in between. If you're not using it for extreme use-cases likt shooting pictures for billboard-size ads or doing night shots of flying bats, then this is all the camera you need as an amateur or enthusiast. However, there will always be specific (expensive) camera/lens combo's better suited for every single task. Finding a camera that will do the same as the FZ1000 with the same quality for less than 3000 euro's however, will be difficult. Before I got this camera, I used a (admittedly old) Canon EOS 350D with Sigma 17-70 and 70-300 lenses (cost me around 1500 euro's). The Panasonic beats it for every use case I could come up with. It focuses significantly faster and more reliably, it provides pictures with higher detail from macro to far-tele and was even significantly better when shooting pictures in a theater. I wanted the Panasonic to not always have to swap lenses or carry a large bag. Nowadays, I don't use the Canon anymore except for nostalgia and the feeling/sound of a DSLR. I'm certain there are better camera's out there, especially high-end (fullframe) DSLR's. But buying one with good quality 4K video and 25-400 mm zoom range with bright/fast lenses will be enormously expensive.

I want to buy the FZ200 or FZ1000... not sure yet. The main use and reason to buy, is jewelry close up photography. Hey graham, happy holidays to you mate. Was checking in periodically to see if you've done the x920 vs fz1000 comparison. Anyway thinking of getting the fz1000, but only if the footage IQ is sharper and better than the x920. Interested in at least hearing a quick reply of which you think has the overall better IQ in bright daylight...only interested in the best possible candid footage I can get and already sold the x920. Cheers pal.
@GrahamHoughton1210 жыл бұрын
The FZ1000 is proving to be a great all rounder for me and the X920 hasn't been used in months now. As most of the time I needs stills as well as HD video the FZ1000 and the ability to capture 4k UHD and then down convert to 1080p gives some sparkling results. The x920 is very bad at stills so it would mean carrying 2 cameras. Ok if the light is very low the X920 will get better footage due to the lens being brighter but in normal levels I now prefer the FZ1000 and if I really want good video the G6 or GH3 capture great 1080p as well.

Low level light photography/videography with smaller based sensor cameras always means the increased risk of using high ISO to get a reasonable exposure. This in turn leads to image noise. The FZ1000 looks to have about 3 extra stops of exposure advantage over the FZ200 when it comes to low light photography. Of course you have to balance this with the loss of 1 stop at full zoom, something the FZ200 doesn't do. Overall though the FZ1000 in this situation has to be better.

Graham Houghton Thank you for your response. I think because of the price difference, I am going to try to make the FZ200 work. UPS just delivered it a while ago and the battery is charging! I will depend on your videos and free e-book manual to teach me how to take the best photos & videos I can! Thank you so very much for your time and your help :)

+Daniel Youngblood You should learn to make your own decisions when doing photography, which means learning the basics, and using those excellent manual controls on your camera; you will soon find that your images will show a great improvement. However, many of us still go for that full auto setting in a pinch, when we don't have time to fiddle with settings to get a quick shot of the kids, etc. I know I still use it when I can't get things the way I want quickly. Good luck.

Hi.I would love to buy the FZ200 or the FZ1000. I'm watching video's for months now and still can't decide which one is perfect for me. I hope you can help me. I used point and shoots before in IA mode, but I would love to learn more about photography. I'm looking for a camera which makes good pictures and also makes good video's, because I don't want to carry around a camera and camcorder. I will use it for holidays and for making pictures of flowers, people and animals. Does the FZ1000 makes more beautifull video's with 4k then the FZ200? Even for an amateur? I would love to buy a good camera that I can use for years. I hope someone can help me...

Firstly excellent differentiated reviews and a real seeing sensibility for different camera designs & possible potentials. I have the fz70 which I bought for its optical range flexibility - at its time the maximum wide + maximum zoom. I also have the canon eos m and though I am not going to update for the moment, this is something that I would really consider - a larger sensor than the Fz200/70 but the flexibility of a bridge with the new features of more focus/defocus controls and better stabilization. I also think 4K video could be cropped very effectively for 1080p. Watching both your reviews has given me a very clear idea of the camera and where the bridge camera can evolve. Many thanks for your thoughtfully made reviews

Thank you, as usual your videos are great. Interesting some of the shots show the FZ200 blacks crushed, some the FZ1000, puzzled.

I think that the fz1000 is a better camera because of the larger sensor, but with that comes a larger size and price. If I hadn't had the fz200, I'd but one, but can't justify it if I already have a large camera DSLR that I don't like to carry around.

Graham, how do you know when the camera is at 2x digital zoom?
@PeterAbt9 жыл бұрын
Go to Settings and turn on (i think its called) intelligent zoom then you will be able to zoom in even more than 400mm when the display says 800mm you have 2× digital zoom ;)
@JimKurczewski9 жыл бұрын
Oh, I didn't know that iZoom used digital zoom. Kind of makes sense though -- going from 400mm to 800mm. Thanks!

Because of the small sensor the optics give large depth of field. The only way to achieve shallow DOF is to use F2.8 and a long focal length. Keep your subject close to the lens and as far away from the background as possible. Remember f2.8 on the FZ200 is the same as F16 on a full frame camera in terms of depth of field!

Great video. The FZ1000 has the edge in most if not all depts. FZ200 represents much better value though. Look forward to a video comparison if you get the chance.
@onenarrowdoor10 жыл бұрын
I was about to say the same thing - and also request a video comparison - but not before requesting a full review of the FZ1000 video capabilities. Personally, I cannot afford this and have bought the FZ200 to tide me over until I can afford the GH4. I wonder if some who are taking their first steps from bridge to mirrorless would be tempted to go for the GX7 over the FZ1000.
@felixthecat188210 жыл бұрын
The only advantage I can see regarding the FZ1000 is better image quality at high iso ranges, however, for depth of colour, tone and clarity the FZ200 wins hands down. The FZ1000, images are too far to the blue end of the spectrum, giving rather cold looking pictures, whereas those taken with the FZ200 appear warmer and richer in colour.
@dengor45hd489 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Owens He left the FZ1000's settings at default, but adjusted the FZ200's to his normal choices, so I think that kind of negates any complaints about sharpness, contrast, colour, etc. The FZ1000 has a much wider range of in-camera adjustments available than the FZ200, but he didn't use any of them. Very informative review though.

I shoot Motorsports Photography with a Canon Rebel T3I and a 70-300 MM L Series Lens... which doesn't auto focus for video and will not shoot at 120 fps at a decent resolution for slo mo. I have been using the FZ200 solely for video, a few podium shots and scenery, so I'm used to having to have 2 cameras. The FZ200 is now ailing and in need of repair which should cost around $250. I was seriously considering the FZ1000, mainly because I like the larger size and hope for a better grip. The FZ200 is too small like a toy. However I can't seem to be able to confirm that the FZ1000 shoots 120 fps at 720p. I'm really not impressed with the difference in 4K and who has the monitors for it anyway? The FZ200 makes for great Slow Motion Video and Motorsports enthusiasts love it. Especially since the GoPro's now have it.

there has been a lot of bad information circulated around the so called high speed mode of the FZ1000 based on pre-production software releases. In the production version of the camera high speed video really doesn't exist. The sensor is clocked at 100fps however the video output is 1080p 25 fps MP4 format. It looks like there must have been stability/overheating issues? and so it was culled from the final software releases.
@timturner931510 жыл бұрын
Graham Houghton Now I'm confused... another Video Review I saw claimed it would shoot 1080p at 120 fps. If it doesn't, I wouldn't buy it.
@GrahamHoughton1210 жыл бұрын
Tim Turner Hi Tim I'm only doing off the footage I downloaded and viewed in Movie inspector and in my editing program and it is output as a 1080p 25fps file. The sensor will captur at 100fps on a PAL based camera and 120fps on a NTSC camera so that is where the discrepancy is I think

The FZ200 which I own have a lot of downside... If you switch to record from MP4 to AVCHD, the cameras/video goes around 2 stop darker, Panasonic never did anything to fix this issue. It doesn't have a BSI sensor, so even with the constant F/2.8, you still get a lot of noise at ISO 200. When recording in MP4, blocking may appear on the footage you are recording, but you will see it till you download it, making the video useless, so there you go... you get nothing good in either recording mode (MP4 or AVCHD). So I'm done with Panasonic, I'm switching to Sony, purchasing the Sony FDR-AX33 4K.
