That dragging resize of the focus area is great wow, I never even thought about that. I really don't understand people being upset over this not having 4K60 - it's such a demanding and niche application on the camera that it's really not something you can expect to come out of a small midrange body. Very happy to see the dial on the back for improved picture reviewing as well as the moved mic port + addition of the headphone port. Those really are very welcome improvements I didn't expect to see from something in this class. This is looking like a really competent camera and improvement on the G85 - I was worried that Panasonic might ditch this line of cameras between the GX9 and G9 since it's my favourite ergonomically of any mirrorless camera I've used to date and I'm happy to see they're continuing it.

Oh please, even my $200 action cam has 4K60, it isn't rocket science. More likely just artificial market segmentation.

The camera also uses old 49 area focusing. I think the more likely explanation is they didn't want to put the new processor in@@hindesite

Anyone else feeling "underwhelmed"? 🤔 Sure this is a great camera... because the G80/G85 is a great camera... but a few tweaks for ~$500 a price hike? I think I'd stick with the G80/G85 if on budget or splash out for the G9... I'm not sold at this price point with so many great camera offers to be had right now...
@Fastfreddyii

There are two "major" improvements, that puts the G90 amongst (or close to) APS-C cameras. Firstly, is the increase in image size. For basic work, any enhancement in image quality/size, is worth paying for. Secondly, unlimited recording with 'in camera' battery charging is another significant inclusion, together with V-log L in the price. These features at this price make for a very attractive bit of equipment. I have used Lumix and Canon. Lumix bodies are significantly easier to use in my opinion, with menus that are intuitive, to me at least. Canon produce quality images, at a cost. If Sony ever produce an A7R with a fully articulated screen, I will own one, whatever the cost. For now, the G80/G90 provide the best alternative in value for money.

I bought you a big coffee for this one, Gordon! Personally, as a user of the G85, I welcome these improvements over the G85 and love how it works itself as a bit of a G85/G9 blend with a touch of the latest Panasonic offerings. Thrilled to bits that there's now a headphone jack and the mic jack has been moved away from blocking the fully-articulating screen, but the other ports are still in its way. $1200 for a G95 with the 12-60 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens (which I already have due to owning the G85) gives me pause. This isn't because the camera as described isn't good--I think it's great for that price point--but being in the MFT system already (and already having a decent selection of lenses I own) the idea of not having a body-only option in North America (based on other information I've heard and read online) makes me sort of step back from it. That, and having MFT lenses already, I can grab the G9 body only for the same (or sometimes a tad cheaper) price point or the GH5 body only for around a few hundred dollars more (and that is a video beast), though having to also buy that firmware upgrade separately. Overall, I think the G95 will become Panasonic's entry-level MFT body much like the G7 and G85 have done and will make a lot of newly-minted photographers and burgeoning videographers happy to have this camera option available to them.

Excellent video. I need your advice please: I currently own the Nikon D5600 and I want to upgrade to a good hybrid mirrorless camera. I want IBIS, flippy screen, wonderful video and photo quality with good auto focus. I love the video coming out of the GH5/G9 but I prefer the size of the G90. Furthermore I think I will shoot most video in 1080p as I find 4K files too large and difficult to work with. I have in desperation also considered the Sony A7 III with the 24-105 kit lens(Great deals right now). Drawback with the Sony is heavy camera/lenses, expensive, no touch and flippy screen. But it offers best in class AF, low light performance and picture quality and blurry background. I am also considering the Fuji XT-4 but I find it a bit expensive for what it offers(when available). What are your thoughts? Do you think I will be happy with the G90? Thanks a lot. And a side question as well: why is everyone talking about 4K? Is it really worth the hassle on KZbin where most people watch in 1080p anyway(yes-downsampled it looks slightly better...but will average joe really be able to tell the difference?) More important is good colors/exposure, great sound, sharp AF, not shaky in my opinion.

Ok Gordon, thanks for the quick review. It gives me a nice to have problem though, I currently have a G80 which i will not get rid of, however I have been looking at the G9 body which for a good secondhand example would be in the £800 region. I think I am going to answer my own question here, the G9 still gives better features in particular 6K burst which I believe gives an 18 MP image? The G90 would I think be a bit more than £800 for body only. G9 it is then? Mind you GH5 bodies are coming down in price rapidly at the moment??? Oh no!

Great review Gordon, look forward to your real review of this camera... I've subscribed, I hope it gets you the coffee you deserve. I have the G80/G85 and simply love it, but do wonder why Panasonic cannot simply upgrade my camera with a firmware option. Given the screen is already touch screen, why can't the dragging resize of the focus area be included in the G80/G85? I do like those new button placements and the third spinner at the back, but that is not enough to tempt me to upgrade. I had the G2 before the G80/G85, so it will be a while before I consider another upgrade.

I'm considering a new camera (still have my G3!) and want something that would be useful for video blog work. 4K would be nice, but I can live with HD. What I do want is external mike input, and external video monitor while recording video. I've heard that the G95 and G85 can both do this. With an external monitor I wouldn't care about the stupid mike jack placement on the G85, but the USB power and charge feature is VERY desirable. I guess if I came across a good deal on a good used G85 I'd go for it, otherwise I'll wait for the G95 to drop in price.

4K60 and full sensor 4K would have been great at this price point but this camera at the very least needed "6K Photo Mode" and 10-bit HDMI with V Log-L to be considered at the price it's asking. For the money most would be better off with the G85, GH4, or G9. I know we're spoiled after the leap in design and technology the G6 to the G7 was, then another good jump from the G7 to the G85 but this is just a refined G85. It's essentially new hardware and software without new features. This is not a "mini-GH5" like the marketing suggests, it's a "GH4-Lite" just slightly above the G85. Some may point out the V Log-L and 1080p120 additions but those are not as useful as you may think because this is an 8-bit only camera (internal or external) and the 60-120fps modes are forced into a 1080p30 file done in camera.

For a G7 owner, this would be a great upgrade. As for comparing it to a G9 (I own it along with G7), the unlimited recording feature and Vlog seem to be what separates the two. I personally do not record unlimited, but as an upgrade from my G7, I can see getting it. The G7 when released (that's when I bought it) was $100 less on release IIRC. So, with IBIS, unlimited recording, larger sensor, VLog, charging/powering from USB, etc... it's a real upgrade. G80/85? Tough call.

@@cameralabs Good enough for me, as the GX9 has lower dark energy current than the G9 and GH5 do (barely any hot pixels on the GX9 on a three minute exposure even at ISOs 3200 and 6400, and doesn't run into any bloom issues either). I know... Niche desire, but I'm slowly getting into widefield astrophotography (aka with a small refractor telescope) so it's nice to be able to do such. My G85 is nice for light trail pictures on roads (at least if you're careful about settings, and make use of Long Exposure Noise Reduction), but it wouldn't do as well with the long exposures required for taking photos of nebulae. Sure, I could buy a different camera that's more suited to the task (Canon DSLRs are popular due to long battery life, and their tethering capabilities), but I like - no love - micro four thirds for it's compact versatility... Plus that built in intervalometer Panasonic includes being fairly nice, meaning it really is possible to build a no-frills lightweight right that packs into a backpack, and weighs 25lbs or less.
