Panasonic Lumix S5 (the one with bad autofocus)

I have had the Lumix S5 for a few weeks and I am delighted, my last 3 cameras have been Sony (A6400, Alpha 7 II and Alpha 7 III) and the focus also failed in some low light situations. The Lumix S5 has an approach that requires more configuration work than other brands, it has many options to adapt it to each situation, this makes many people end up disappointed, especially in video, in my case after many hours of testing and recording the 90% of what I have recorded is usable. With the Sony in that aspect I had nothing to configure, the phase detector is an advantage, but on the S5 it is not a drama either. In photography, autofocus almost always works well. In the rest of the aspects it is a camera that is above most quality-price ratio. Totally recommended. Good video!

hey bro great video man, I also have the s5 and I got used to shot with manual focus but just recently I got the s5iix and even with great auto focus i still see myself choosing to use manual focus, I love the control to choose where I want my focus, the more you use it the less you miss auto focus, take care man and have fun 👍

Image quality is much better than the S5II in video with most profiles, fine details are weird on the S5II.

hay mate give this a go for better auto focus have the camera in ( S ) not ( C ) and you find the auto focus sticks better with Human / animal Detect AF

As a s5 mark I owner that primarily shoots video. I would wait like cut my losses on the mark 1 and sell it and put those funds for the mark 2. Not because it’s “better” but because of full size hdmi while still having the ability to take photos.

I have S5 and S5ii. The S5ii has firmware 3.0 supposed AF improvements. To be clear, am not certain the S5ii is vast improvement even with firmware 3.0. My S5 takes clearer images in stills and video. Using Lumix prime glass, 50mm and 85mm. For the S5, I use the tap and set to identify where I want the camera to focus, it woks well for me. The S5ii PDAF tracking has problems. It is just not clear that the S5ii is a better camera. Between the two I am inclined to sell the S5ii.

I agree. I know how to to my S5 and was able to use an S5iix for a while. Autofocus surprised me but I still like my S5.

I got mine today but unfortunately I can't playback any of the video in daVinci or VLC 🥺

If you convert your video to ProRes with VirtualDub2 it'll work fine 🙂

Hi Nate thank you for this. What do you think of the Lumix S5 when taking videos of family, especially with kids running around. I am planning to get this, but would like a hands on advise if this is enough for an everyday family photography and for some night time city shots (christmas lights). Thanks!

for kids running around it can be tricky due to slow autofocus, you will need to shoot at high apertures. I film my kids on s5 with 28 mm manual lens, and its not always easy. it was easier with sony a7iii.

Is af on the s5 better or worse than gh5? Gh5 af is good enough for what i do

Not totally sure on that. I've only ever used a GH4 and the S5 and from that I'd say the S5 is better than the GH4.

I used to have a gh5, i've been shooting with s5 for ~1.5 years now and would say that it is better than in gh5. Though not reliable. In bright daylight and good lighting it works alright. Issues arise in busy low contrast scenes or when in low light. With human recognition it works alright when facing the camera but if the subject moves a lot and turns away it may lose focus. Also af is a lot worse with sigma/third party lenses and telephoto focal lengths.

@@Ard3z ja fast moving things are not good for this kind of af. I do boudoir videos, models move slow af works fine.

Unfortunately no, not comparable to the S5 ii and iix. I use the upgraded bodies at work and they are much more reliable for video with their autofocus.
