Panasonic NV-S90 S-VHS-C camcorder

Here is a pretty high ended Pansonic S-VHS-C camcorder I found. It does not work anymore, the CCD doesn't output anything and the tape mechanism is totally worn out. Still interesting to see such an old piece of technology.

A very nice historical camera. I have a similar one too. The rotary head bearing makes the noise. It started doing this to mine too. It is slippery and you just need to drop a little oil into it. I used engine oil. A special one would probably be better, but I didn't have one. It works anyway. I don't remember anymore, but I think it's easy to get to without disassembling. After a few years of inactivity I found that playback stopped working. It was possible to switch to play and only rewind was possible. I found that the buttons and wiring are made of ribbon silver plated wires and they started to fall apart at the connector. After cleaning, it is not even possible to switch to play. I'll try the touch up silver polish. As someone wrote in the comments that they can't play, I would bet on the same problem.

You also have to consider this camcorder may be affected by bad SMD capacitors, those can cause all kinds of problems.

It looks cheaply made, but has a decent amount of features for its time.

Yes, like all Panasonic camcorders of the time it has a pretty cheap feel to it. But it does seem to be pretty good technically. I'd still prefer a Sony Hi8 camcorder of that time period though.

Mine S99E is working, but batteries are dead.. does anybody know source of some cheap replacement battery? That shutter button can be pressed, but not in manual mode. And this definitely was not cheap flimsy camera, but pretty hi-end camera with 14x optical zoom.

As mentioned in the video, these camcorders have bad SMD capacitors. Your camcorder very likely will be broken like the one seen in the video. Playback won't work anymore then.

just press the “VTR/CAMERA” on top of the camera. You can start the playback by pressing the “MENU/ PLAY” button

I have a similar camera with a similar problem. The recording cannot be played. I figured out that the ribbon cable from the control to the board is faulty. It is made of silver strips and the silver material has started to disintegrate after years and the contact at the connector is melting. I'm going to try to fix it with auto silver heated rear glass repair paint. Otherwise, the entire strap with all the buttons would have to be replaced.

Is this NTSC or PAL format.

+ciccone39 It's PAL, indicated by the model number starting with 'NV'. NTSC models started with 'PV'.

+DrCassette Was there a noticeable difference between s-vhs-c and regular vhs-c camcorders? Was s-vhs-c better then Hi8 camcorders?

VHS-C has only 240 lines of resolution, S-VHS-C has 480 lines. Hi8 was even better than that due to the better overall design.

+DrCassette How many lines does Hi8 have and does it have a better picture than s-vhs-c? By overall design do you mean because Hi8 could record up to two hours per tape?

Regarding the technical specifications of those systems, please do some of your own research. The design of the Video8 cassette made it more reliable and allowed the mechanisms to be smaller.
