There is much to like about this smaller camera. Size is a "big" one. You cannot match audio, video, codecs, in a similar form factor. I use for outdoor marching band videos. It works best in manual where I need to set shutter speed to 1/60 and record at 4k30fps. A small tripod plate helps mitigate and buttons are then accessible. The small form factor makes this much more portable, carrying, gimble, handheld, etc, especially when climbing atop press boxes. The Audio Technica 875R shotgun mic is a great addition to use with the 24bit LPCM 48 khz audio capture. The livestreaming is great, as long as you have decent upload bandwidth. 8mbps or better.

The onboard streaming appealed to me but not enough to spend 2500 AU on it. Every video I have watched shows pristine image quality but your ungraded footage showed how it really is. Thanks for the accurate review.

I recently bought it because it matches my GH-5 (they say). I would use it in full manual mode because this camera does it better than me in manual mode. I am even experimenting now with an anamorphot in front of it. It works on 40% of the zoom range :-) A fantastic little camera for idiots like me that simply want to point and shoot.

Good luck. I like mine. If you need to do some post production noise reduction, I have found that Neat Video works great. I use it a lot, especially with this camera when in low light environments that don't have a lot of spill light. Strangely, I get better straight out of camera noise on a lit city street than I do at many wedding receptions. Spill light is very helpful, and so I'd the light on the tip handle. Cheers.

Hello. Thanks for your comment and question. I don't know if there are any " best " settings for this camera. I do not often use the auto feature, but when I do it's usually outdoors. When I'm inside I find manual settings to work best. Those settings will constantly change based on your lighting conditions and your environment, and if you are trying to match another camera such as a two or three camera setup. In those instances I use the phase adjustment to adjust my color so that the cameras match as close as is possible. I have done this with my cameras in my studio, so when I go on set or on location I usually only need dial in white balance for each shot. That is done prior to shooting. I can give you some tips though. When shooting manual try to keep your game below 12 decibels if possible. If you're in low light you may need to go up to 15 or 18 but anything above those I have found to look grainy. So if you think of a low light situation in a church chapel, or a wedding reception. You would be better to shoot as wide as possible, meaning don't zoom, so that you can keep your aperture or iris open all the way. The camera's got a very good synchronization feature so if you're shooting 30 frames a second and you need the extra light of shooting 30 frames instead of 60, it tends to look natural. Generally, for a cinematic effect you would want to keep your shutter rate at twice your frame rate. This would require shooting at 60 frames per second in the example I'm talking about. If you did that and then dropped your shutter to 30 for the synchro shutter feature, you would let him twice the amount of light as at 60 frames a second. This would help brighten things up quite a bit. If you do any zooming in low light situations you need to be very careful of the image darkening while you zoom. This can be avoided using the auto game feature. I do like that. I will use that and tell it to do usually plus one or 1/3 of a stop. Finally, you'll want to make sure that your white balance matches the direction that you're going and sometimes that can change based on the direction that you're shooting So keep that in mind. I hope this helps. Cheers.

Can I use the micro USB port as mic input? Noise starts creeping in around 6-8Db and is usable for me up to about 10-12db. You may have different needs. In most cases the images is still sharp even when noise is present. This makes it easy to use denoising software in post production as needed. Yes. You could use the camera for your purpose. Just keep in mind the small sensor drawbacks and you'll be ok. It's a very good camera. Use a tripod or stabilization.

Usually you can buy the x1500 for 1700 and the handle for 300 and spend about 2000. The x2000 usually costs 2150-2200, so you can save about 150-200 bucks if you buy them separately. Cheers.

It’s customizable and user button 4. I use it a lot with auto gain and auto iris. I set my max auto gain no higher than 16dBl. You can further customize the skinny ring to iris and auto exposure level control. I don’t use it that much but think it can be handy sometimes. Nice, im still deciding between this and Sony Ax700, could i ask you opinion regarding the two?
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm 3 жыл бұрын
I think there are some interesting considerations between the two. Sony has the larger sensor, but Panasonic has better codecs. Both do 4k but the Panasonic does 60fps. I believe that the Sony sensor is 8bit, but haven't been able to confirm. The Panasonic is 10bit. The song will be better in low light but the Panasonic has twice the optical zoom range 12 vs 24x. The list goes on and on. I think the cameras are made for two different filmmakers. It's hard to say, but I decided to go with Panasonic because of all the benefits over a 1"sensor that the smaller 1/2.5" sensor gives. But I have several camcorders. If I was buying my first camcorder and I was looking in that price range I think I would consider the Panasonic UX-90. Bigger sensor, better codecs than the Sony, a little more zoom, better low light than the x1500. Also 8 bit. No 4k60, but 4k up to 30. It's a great camera for the money. That's something I would consider.

hi - found this video as I begin my next journey looking for a consumer/pro camera, specifically for filming sports, outdoors, about 100' distance, subject moving as is the background (on water). Looking for a camera that can maintain focus on auto really well, have 60 and 120 fps modes to use and easy workflow, sd card removal to move files to laptop later. Specifically for the sports capture, how does this camera do (1500) ?
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm 2 жыл бұрын
The autofocus pulses on auto. You will notice it especially if you're trying to track fast moving subjects. You can lessen the effect by selecting an autofocus point under the area focus mode by tapping the area you want to focus on. Face detect autofocus is available in full auto mode and that works well for faces it's still pulses a little bit. It works well enough for wedding videos. Manual focus does not pulse at all, but it's difficult to manually focus and track at the same time. The autofocus pulses because it is contrast based autofocus, not phase detect autofocus. It's how the system works. These 600 mm zoom and the small package is unique in its category, and you won't find anything with that long of a zoom range at this price point. And good light out doors and even silhouette shots at night it will do well. Good luck let me know how it goes.

Is it only best to use 10bit 4.2.2 if you're planning on colour grading? Is there any benefit you using 10 bit 4.2.2. Over the other settings if you are not colour grading??
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm 5 ай бұрын
Use the highest color depth and sampling you can get. The benefits are appreciable whether or not you color grade. Just because cameras at 8-bit only show 256 different shed gradients per each color channel. This is very limited and makes it easier to get blocking and banding in certain situations. Of course, you can avoid those situations if you pay close attention and get it right in camera the first time. However, shooting in 10bit gives you 1024 different shade variations per color channel. This puts you in the billions of colors range as compared to 8-bit 16.7 million colors. That sounds like a lot, but it's not. The color palette can get used up quickly. So, until we have better color bit depths, it's best to stick with the maximum. There will be a time when you can record more color information that is necessary, and the file size gets huge. At that point, I would suggest shooting in lower bit depths, like an audio. Many people get caught up over 32-bit float recording at 192 Kilohertz. That creates gigantic file sizes and most people don't even need it. So, 24-bit 48 is what I suggest for audio for most people. There are times when you want the 32-bit float, and in those times you should know enough about audio to make the decision for yourself. And if you don't know, choosing 32-bit float won't hurt. But as someone that records quite a bit of audio, the file sizes are just too big and not necessary to pay for the storage in hard drive space for information that I don't use. 24-bit 48 kHz is the way to go for most recordings for most people. Currently 10-bit 422 color sampling at 60 frames a second uses about 200 megabits per second when recorded an h.265. compare this to 8-bit 422 footage which is usually a minimum of 150 megabits per second when recorded in h.265. The difference in file size is small here, so the benefit of recording in the higher bandwidth makes it worth it.

Specifically, not well. In general, only ok. The key is spill light and knowing your exposure settings. I have had fantastic results with sunsets, city streets, and wedding receptions, but they all required a very dedicated approach to get the results I needed. Through my testing I found that spill light and wide angel is your best friend. Football games shouldn't be too much of an issue. If it's anything like my HS/College stadium, it would door well. That is because of the massive lighting usually found in those environments. You should be able to zoom with confidence as well. If you were recording a sunset on the beach, then I would say don't zoom, shoot wide to keep your aperture open, use synchro scan for your shutter, and try not to push the gain up top high, but get high enough to capture the shot, and finally, be ready for denoising software. Cheers.

I have been doing a lot of testing regarding low light. I'm going to put up some footage soon of Sunset at a pier. The lowlight footage looks great. So, my opinion of the low light capabilities is evolving as I test the camera. Compared to a 1" camera, the low light is worse. But I don't think it is as bad as I thought from my initial test. Compared to a 1/3" sensor, as in the XF300, you will get better all around performance including low light. The Panasonic sensor is newer and bigger. Compared to the XF300, you are getting one sensor instead of three. The 3 sensor arrangements will generally give better color depth and better noise performance when compared to other single sensors of the same size, class, and year. I would say that you could upgrade and never look back. 4k, 200Mbps bit rate, 4:2:2 color depth, 24 times zoom, better autofocus (if you use it), and an all around fantastic camera. Except.. the camera is small. It's fiddley. The buttons are tiny, the zoom ring and iris ring are too close together. That's a real thing to get used to. All of my camcorders are the size of the ux180 or larger, a bit bigger than the XF300. The Panasonic is about 1/3 the size of the ux180. So, getting used to it is a thing. Cheers.

There is so much to say when thinking about these cameras. Good news, I did post the low light video. It's up now. I'll be posting the commentary that goes along with it in another review update video soon. I use this for weddings and receptions and I love it. It's a really handy camera. It has its own quirks, but all in all I enjoy using it a lot. Compared to my HCX1/UX180, the image quality is excellent on all those cameras. Low light is better on the bigger sensors, but I use a light on my camera at receptions anyway, so that's not a pain point for me. Consider the Panasonic CX350 over Canons XF705. Or even the Sony UX190 XD CAM. That last one is another 3x 1/3" sensor, but the sensors are sonys top of the line back side illuminated dual iso sensors and are really great in low light from what I have heard. Plus 4 chanel's of audio in the Sony.. you could even consider the JVC GY 500U. That's another beefy camcorder. All are in the same class as the 705 but priced less.

What about X2000 in a studio situation? I mean using led light. Do you think it's good for shooting in a place without any kind of natural light? Thank you very much. By the way, excellent review! Greetings from Brazil.

Hello from the USA. Thanks for your comment. You can definitely use this camera indoor with studio lights. I would recommend using as much light as possible to avoid noise. The cameras small sensor is good, but it does have visible image noise at low gain settings. Whenever I use it indoor I make sure to use the led light on the handle and add extra light to the scene when possible. When I shoot without extra light I have to denoise the footage in post production. I use neat video. It works well. The cameras image holds up nice when when denoising software is used. That means that even when the gain is boosted to the sensor and becomes noisy, the image stays sharp and colors stay accurate. Now, if you had the option to use a larger sensor camera, that will help out with noise, but the x200o is great. Don't forget that the wide angle goes as wide as f1.8. That is a huge help in low light. So if you can use it at the wide end, you will have even better results. A note on the camera... Unless you need the SDI connection in the x2000, you would save about $200USD buying the x1500 and the top handle. In US dollars, I bought my x1500 and top handle for 1997. The x2000 would have been 2197. Maybe you can get a deal like that in Brazil. Good luck!

Do you think it's useable in low light ?
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. I made a low light review of this camera at a pier from sunset into nightfall. I was very impressed with the camera. Since that video, I have used it a lot in low light after sunset and found it to be good in low light. The things to consider are that any camera will need some light to do well in low light. I wouldn't suggest trying to record in a single candle setting. A larger sensor would also be better in low light, but remember that this camera has an f1.9 lens at the widest angle. So, zoom less when in low light and you will be better off.

Well, thanks, but things get better with time. As I learned the quirks of this camera, everything got better from this initial review. I have done many updates documenting my experiences with it. It's a great camera. Maybe you should check out some of my other videos about the camera. Looking at your channel, the most comparable video to compare against would be your "Dromana Sunset" and this video of mine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnPcmYmGp7KKg9U YOu can skip the discussion part. The low light/noise capabilities and color grade are the most direct comparison. I believe the overall image and final product are more than comparable, possibly even better than what this video showed.

@@RobertHamm what's your main cam these days? I mainly shoot full frame mirrorless Canon now, image quality is so good it's hard to beat. But every now and then I look back at camcorders and think maybe I should get one just to have! Mainly for long form conference coverage where image quality is not as crucial. I've owned the c100 Mark ii, xc10, Sony, but thinking of getting a used XF400, so just looking at what else is out there.

You would probably like this video if you're on the fence about camcorders: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pl68q55njJxnrJosi=vrHyxDuFI8Q8KMKN Camcorders as compared to full frame mirrorless cameras, or any camera for that matter, are completely different beast. And I can say from experience that the way I thought about light and exposure on the full frame side of the house is completely opposite to what I need to do to get excellent imagery on the camcorder side of the house. So if you're thinking about a camcorder, it's not about gain and Iris, it's about embracing the low light, spill light, environmental light and using the zoom for bokeh. With camcorders, I look for the darkness to shoot with it, instead of trying to find a way to shoot around it like I would with a full frame camera. The video I linked above is taken with a camcorder that's 7 years old. The sensor it was using at the time was great for camcorder, but was probably one generation older than the sensors in the current mirrorless and DSLR cameras. Currently, my main cameras are a Panasonic S5 and a Sony a73. The camcorders I use are a Panasonic AGCX 350 and Panasonic HCX 2000. If I'm shooting for fun just for myself, I used the Fujifilm X100F, the mint TL 70 plus, the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo, and the DJI pocket 2. I use my camcorders for video 80% of the time over my cameras. Most of the time, if I'm shooting in studio, it's almost 100%. The only time I'll use a full frame camera for video is if it's necessary for a specific reason. Otherwise I grabbed that CX 350 and I hit the road man. One camera 600 mm equivalent zoom the 400 megabits per second All-I recording is excellent, and if I want to record and DNX I can get a 60 frames per second 10-bit signal out to my Ninja v. I generally use a 1/8 strength black mist filter and call it a day.

@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm 2 жыл бұрын
The HCX1 is pretty good for what I do. It's asjustible by spot to spot, or a centrally weighted area that you can change it's size both horizontal and vertical. No face detect or tracking, but it works well. Plus, manual focus is easy, and if you turn the focus ring while in AF the camera will take that as a suggestion to look for focus a little bit closer or further away from its current point. It's a pretty nice feature.

Robert, the tripod mounting segment starting at 8:45 is spot on. It is difficult both to adjust the controls and the "bulk" (to fit in one's palm) on the right side of the camera makes it difficult to lock and unlock the quick release lever on my Manfrotto 577 quick release set-up. I'm thinking a plate or spacer to lift the camera 1/2" or so would help. Are you aware of such a item? BTW - I've owned my x1500 for 4 months now and am still learning, but I am finding ways (in manual set-up) that makes it acceptable, even good in lower light.
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, yes. A tripod plate riser would be helpful. You can get them on Amazon or B&H pretty easily. Small Rig makes a nice one. I don't remember the item number, but if you search for tripod adapter riser you should find what you're looking for. I think a your suggestion of a riser is a great solution to the problem that Panasonic made for us when they designed this camera. Panasonic just wasn't thinking about this camera being used on a tripod... Let alone a gimbyal. I use it on the crane 3S and it works great. Maybe I'll do a video about that.

@@RobertHamm So, well no actually. I wanted to watch a video about your impressions on the Panny x series, and I got a lot of information about a camera that wasn't in the title. So no, not what I was looking for, exactly. Instead of dropping your messages onto the screen so shamelessly, why not just be happy putting your reminders, merch links and maybe a Patreon type link in your description like 10s of thousands of other content creators do? I would be less aggravating to your watchers than what you're doing. And though you categorize this kind of feedback as trivial in the grand scheme of things, think again... it's not. Do only those things that compel people to want to watch your content and rethink those things that you get undesirable feedback from. That was my only point, overstated at it may have been. There. I just gave you free advice probably worth more than the cost of sponsoring your next video. I'll go ahead and assume you disagree. But please, don't get me wrong here on this... I wish you continued success, you obviously know your stuff. Props for that. Peace and health, my friend.

I'm sorry you don't like yours. I love mine. Most of the videos you have seen on this channel have had the x 1500 featured in it either as the main or b camera. You say it has bad image quality. That has not been my experience. Even in low light. Check this video out : sunset at the Pier kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKHVha2cjdasa8ksi=BJFhHWsYMFkUYMNY The x1500 has a smaller sensor than most prosumer camcorders and it is a little bit tricky to use in low light situations, but that doesn't stop me from getting amazing footage in almost any situation. From sunsets to dark City Streets and stage performances, I get beautiful images from this camera. It's about experience. I know from our previous conversations about frame rate, codex, audio sampling and bitrate, that you're new to a lot of filmmaking. Learning how to use all different cameras is important. What this camera gives you is the longest zoom possible in the smallest form factor with excellent codecs. The price you pay for that is a smaller sensor. Smaller sensors mean less low light capability in general. However, you saw the video I posted above. If you watched it, you'll see sunsets and zoomed in shots at the beach at night time after the sun's gone down. Why do they look so good? Experience. Although you can buy yourself into a new camera, you can't buy your way into more experience. That takes time. So, good luck on your filmmaking journey. I wanted to post this reply very publicly, just like you posted your decision to return it, so that those interested in this conversation will see IT'S NOT THE CAMERA. It's the user. I completely disagree that the image quality is bad. I do understand it may not be the right camera for you, and for others. That's a personal choice, that's okay. However, this is a great camera even if I don't like the buttons.

@RobertHamm 5 ай бұрын
No doubt. And you have to have something that works for you. And the screen on the X1500 will lie to you. It's too bright, contrasty, and has too much noise reduction built in. I usually turn the contrast, saturation, and brightness down when I'm using it. The LCD viewfinder is closer to what you will get on your footage, but I don't like using it because the screen is so small AND the eyecup is hard rubber, making it impossible to use with my glasses. I don't even use it.

8:42 Why would you need backlit buttons on a camcorder with 1/2.5" sensor? The VX1 has exactly the same sensor and lens and costs less than half of the X1500 camera. Unless you badly need 4K/60 the VX1 is a lot better option in a lot smaller body.
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm 2 жыл бұрын
What does sensor size have anything to do with usability? As if a small sensor first in it's class camera wouldn't deserve other professional features. Like backlit buttons. The buttons are small and difficult to use. Back lighting would have been an improvement. The X1500/2000/CX10 outclasses the VX1 in very way. One is aimed at professionals and the other at amateur's.

I'm glad you like'd the video. But, your assessment that I think the camera cant be used in low light or as a professional tool is wrong. It is true that I would not buy this camera again, but that is because of the buttons. They are terrible and lack the tactile feel to use the camera with muscle memory, especially in low light. That is one reason I wish it had backlit buttons. I did a video about this camera at sunset on a pier in Virginia Beach. I talk a lot about how to shoot in low light. I show raw footage and then apply a deep color grade. The image holds up with very lo noise and color banding. I think the image quality is great. I love the small size. as a tool, it fits in very nicely in my kit. I have huge cameras that produce great quality. That's easy. Making a small camera that can do that is difficult. Panasonic got it right with image quality but wrong with ergonomics. It's just hard to use becuse of the fiddly buttons, rings, and strange autofocus decisions. So, it's really two things: bad button and ergonomics vs excelent image quality and small package. Pick your poision. Thanks for the conversation. Cheers!

Yes, but barely (1/2.3 vs 1/2.5), and it used a much zoomed in portion of the sensor crop. If you look at the marketing, they even say that much. Plus, the newer "smaller" sensor is... Newer. This brings advances in image quality over the older sensor. So, although the older sensor is "bigger", it's not better.
