This was the song that showed the world that Bono was a force to be reckoned with vocally and that their message was being heard. I saw a concert of Nina Simones where she said that she heard this song by U2 and realized young artists were paying attention to what Martin Luther King, Jr was saying and were continuing to spread his message

This is just brilliant. His voice is almost primal in this song. I also love 'With Or Without You'. Absolutely haunting.

It was this song that got me into U2 back in ‘84. The “Unforgettable Fire” was the first U2 record I bought (cassette tape). They went on to do some really great work in the decades that followed. Surprised this song didn’t chart higher in the U.S.

The Edge on guitar is a great match for Bono. He carries the same intensity found in Bono's voice and lyrics into the instrumentation of each U2 song. And he has such a distinctive style of playing. You only have to hear a few chords at the beginning of a song to know that it's the Edge!

Those lines give me chills EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. And I've been a fan of U2 since the 80's! (Yep, I'm old. XD)

I think it is early morning April 4, but yes, thank you

@AnthonyL0401 I believe Bono changes the lyrics in live versions to "early evening" because that's when MLK was actually shot. Just speculation, but because of the time difference people in Ireland would not have heard the news until the next morning, which could explain the original lyric's inacuracy.

Lovely reaction and review! I still get goosebumps hearing this song almost 40 years down the line now, be it the Dr King references or the Jesus / Judas reference - it's sang with such passion and conviction that it's literally still spinetingling. Great to see that it can still resonate and find its way into new hearts and minds all these years later. Blood in their music and a band for everyone. Every one!

Really enjoyed your reaction to this song. You “got it” very quickly-and I loved that you mentioned the great base & drum work from U2’s always-tight rhythm section. And, of course, lead singer Bono’s powerful lyrics (he writes them) and expressive vocal delivery. Please consider reacting to some *live versions* of the U2 songs you pick. U2 is known for being one of the best live rock bands in history.

Great reaction and review. I feel like a lot of U2 prior to Joshua Tree had a very raw, "live" if you will, sound to it. Joshua Tree was definitely more produced sounding, but don't let that steer you away. Anything off of that album is pure gold. Having said that, I really love the early raw U2 sound. I think I've said this before, but I'm still stuck on October as an album. I don't believe there is a video, but I would still love to see your reaction to I Fall Down. Gloria off that album was a huge hit and is also a grrat song. I love all the sleepers off that record the most. It's just got a certain something as a continuous vibe.

When I put together my U2 playlist, I'd see a song and say, "Oh, yeah, that's a good one... oooh, gotta have this one... definitely want this one... " and on it went. After adding all the "gotta have" songs to my playlist, I had 49 songs. Wow. That surprised me, but only for a moment. What an amazing band. PMD, thanks for doing this one for us. ;)

I will never tire of this song! And I listened to it as a child in the 80's. That first chorus is mindblowing when it first kicks in. Love your reaction! Bono's voice is one of the greatest.

Where the Streets Have No Name got me into U2 when I was young - actually it was the Pet Shop Boys cover of Streets that got me into them, but I loved Pride as well, before they got to All That You Can't Leave Behind. Now *that* was a great album as well. Have you reacted to Beautiful Day? Thanks for the great video - hope we can chat! :)

Pancake! You surprised me doing a react of a U2 song! I’ve been fan of them and saw them live and the energy is amazing. You know they composed the song for Martin Luther King jr? That makes it more poignant. I suggest you react (yay, my first request!) to their performance at the Super Bowl. Just search that. Choose the official version. You won’t be disappointed!

Really enjoy your reactions! WIsh I could hear this stuff for the first time. You haven't go to 90s era U2 which is a real treat and quite different from the 80s stuff U2's greatest song - without a doubt, is One. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHe6gZiMm7x1b9E They shot this video dressed in drag, to sort of highlight of the duality within all of us... It was aired but ultimately pulled from rotation as they'd donated proceeds from the single to benefit AIDS research/support, and the band didnt want to suggest any commentary RE: connotations/relationship betweem sexuality and the disease, as some were interpreting it
