David Bowie and his guitarist Mick Ronson were the inspiration for bands such as Duran Duran and singer Billy Idol, that were big later on. You should listen to his Space Oddity as well. Brilliant piece.

Bowie, for me at least, is the GOAT. I'm so happy you're taking a look at him, you won't be disappointed. I look forward to you checking out some of his older stuff too, you'll never hear two Bowie songs that sound the same, and you'll always be entertained. Thank you so much, this was awesome. ❤

There are so many great Bowie music videos! I would suggest the Life on Mars music video (there was a recent 4k upgrade), Boys Keep Swinging, DJ, and I’m Afraid of Americans (4k upgrade as well, and the version of the song used in the music video is a version remixed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails) if you decide to do another set of his music videos. The Ashes to Ashes music video was, for a very long time, the most expensive music video ever, and Bowie storyboarded. The music video’s intention is to be dreamlike, and not necessarily a cohesive story. The Boys Keep Swinging and DJ music videos are both directed by the same guy (David Mallet) who did Ashes to Ashes, though neither are as trippy. Also, people will probably suggest Heroes as I don’t think you’ve reacted to it yet. If you do, don’t do the music video as it cuts the song in half and Bowie just kinda stands in place looking cold. Instead, watch one of the live versions from 1978, either Live at Earls Court (video footage is great and carries the same atmosphere as the music video, edited by NachoVideo) or Live on Musikladen (vocally more impressive, but not as great footage-wise, or sound quality-wise). Both versions are very accurate to the original studio version. EDIT: After re-watching Earls Court, I would just suggest that one, it’s perfect.

Fun fact: written by Bowie & Iggy Pop, "China Girl" was originally released on Pop's 1977 album _The Idiot_ and Bowie - always the generous guy - rerecorded it as a single in 1983, in part, so his friend Iggy Pop could earn some big time royalty $$$ during a low point in his career. 1983's _Let's Dance_ was Bowie's most successful album & period, earning him multiple million$ after a long decade of constant near-bankruptcy in the 1970s. Also, it was Nile Rodgers who came up with the "China Girl" guitar lick. With Nile as producer & Stevie Ray Vaughn as lead guitarist on the album, Bowie recorded _Let's Dance_ in less than two weeks.

You just happened to make a video with 3 of my favorite Bowie songs. Modern Love is about as pop/mainstream as you can get with Bowie (aside from Let's Dance maybe). China Girl and Fashion tho, man, they are so good! I love the edgy sound and weirdness of the fashion video and the vocals and bass on China Girl just can't be beat. Ashes to Ashes is such a layered and complex song. Next up, I also recommend Scary Monsters. It's easy to understand why this man had a whole other persona he performed under. He was truly an artistic chameleon.

For me personally, Bowie's most interresting period is from 1976 to 1980, when he, after the creations of such characters as Major Tom (in the song Space oddity), Ziggy Stardust (From the song and album Ziggy Stardust), Aladdin Sane (From the song and album) in the early 70's, he traveled to Germany and started to experiment more than ever by being inspired by the german band Kraftwerk (on his song Station to station), wrote the even more synth-based single Sound and vison (My all-time favourite Bowie-song) from the Low album, created Heroes (One of the best songs ever written) and start the new decade with Ashes to ashes and the Scary monsters-album. Such a fantastic artist. You are in for a fashinating ride!

China 🇨🇳 Girl 👧 Produced by Nile Rodgers and the late David Bowie. Written by David Bowie and Iggy Pop. The 1st version is from Pop. This video is the 2nd version. More pop and radio 📻 friendly. 😃 All star band. Omar Hakim on drums 🥁 Carmine Rojas on bass guitar 🎸 Rob Sabino on keyboards 🎹 late Stevie Ray Vaughn, RIP, on lead guitar.Song released 40 years 🎂 Modern Love. Same writing and band credits. Both songs are in the Let's Dance 💃 album. Not in this episode. David Bowie and Queen perform Under Pressure. That song is a pivot for Bowie, leading to Let's Dance 💃, his bestselling album. The title track Let's Dance 💃 was the biggest hit song for Bowie: Top 10 in Billboard. In 1982, Billy Idol was in a club with the Rolling Stones. Idol introduced Nile Rodgers to David Bowie. This led to Let's Dance 💃. Further, Idol was inspired to write Rebel Yell. Stevie Stevens co-wrote the song.

Ashes To Ashes is one of the last songs from bowie's golden stage, he had his best artistic moment in the 70's, I recommend you react to "life on mars", "space oddity" and "heroes", Bowie in the 80's made very good songs too, but anyone who is a bowie fan knows the change between the 2 decades, in the 70's his creative, artistic and innovative approach was above all else. Then in the 90s he came back, he did trip hop, industrial, alternative, etc.. from the 90s I recommend you react to "jump they say", "little wonder" and "hello spaceboy"

Bowie generaly changed his look and sound every few years. That's one reason why he's so highly regarded. As a fan since 1972 he was never boring or repeticious. His best years to me were from 1969 thru 1983 with basicaly a stream of brilliant albums. Later he became more inconsitent but still generally produced quality music. He had a creative resurgence in his later years with some highly regaurded albums.

It's impossible to overstate the importance of Bowie to UK pop culture during the 1970's and the beginning of the 1980's. In terms of direction and innovation, he was the standard against which everyone else was measured. My favourite song from him is Sweet Thing/Candidate from Diamond Dogs. Not a hit single, but possibly his best vocal performance.

Great reactions. Very perceptive. Fashion and Ashes to Ashes are from 1980’s Scary Monsters and Super Creeps. China Girl and Modern Love are from 1983’s Let’s Dance. Bowie was a video pioneer before MTV came along. One might say he helped launch the video revolution. At the time music videos were almost always straight forward performances of the band or artist. Bowie pioneered the idea of creating a little films to expand the song visually. You should react to the very first of these from 1979’s Lodger. He made three videos which pre-internet were sent to record stores to promote the album: Look Back in Anger, D.J., and Boys Keep Swinging.

Was bit by the Bowie bug in 1974 & am always thrilled to see a young person discover his music. One of the things I enjoy about your channel is you are very insightful with your interpretations & appreciative of the art forms. Not everyone 'gets' Bowie's musical & visual offerings, but he was fully aware of that. I hope you choose to do another collection of songs from Bowie's discography. It is so varied that it can be tricky to navigate, but there most likely will be more surprises for you.

I'm so glad that you reacted, reviewed and analyzed some of my favorite David Bowie songs. My favorites from these are in the order of Ashes To Ashes, China Girl and Fashion. Yes, Ashes To Ashes is about addiction. David Bowie himself at the time or earlier in his life was dealing with addiction. This song is a continuation of his song Major Tom. And yes, that's a synthesizer towards the end of the song. Another artist Peter Schilling took inspiration from David's song Major Tom and wrote his own version of Major Tom. React to that one too please. I've always thought that the song China Girl was racist and condescending but I had a sense that it was meant to be a critique on the British imperialism in China based on the music video and you picked up on that message. The thing that I want to know is what is the significance of the arm gesture of reaching down to the ground in the Ashes To Ashes and Fashion music videos. If someone knows let us know please. React to his songs Changes, Golden Years and Young Americans please.
