The pancreas is a long, slender gland that is located in the upper abdomen, behind the stomach. It extends from the top of the stomach to the bottom of the abdominal cavity and is about 6 inches long. The pancreas has two main functions: to produce digestive enzymes and to secrete hormones, such as insulin. Digestive enzymes are secreted into the small intestine through a duct called the pancreatic duct. These enzymes help to break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins so that they can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Hormones are produced by cells in the pancreas called pancreatic beta cells.
