Taipei Zoo’s giant panda cub, Yuan Bao, is a little more than two months old now. Zookeepers say she’s thriving and hitting her developmental milestones. Formosa News reporter Stephany Yang stops by the zoo to get an update.
Yuan Bao lies in her bed, sleeping peacefully. The zookeeper lifts her from her bamboo bed and takes her out to the corridor for a routine health check.

Yuan Bao turned 71 days old today. This early morning she weighed more than 4,245 grams. It''s probably about what we expected.
The veterinarian uses a flashlight to check Yuan Bao''s eyes. According to the Taipei Zoo spokesman Eric Tsao, Yuan Bao opened her eyes on the 47th day after birth.

During health care, Yuan Bao can open her eyes. She has a little bit of reflection to the light. But we don''t expect her to spend too much effort to look back to everybody. Because during this period time, the most important thing for Yuan Bao might be getting enough food and sleep.
Every day when zookeepers weigh her, Yuan Bao will try to lift her head and look in the direction of the light source. She can react to waving up to 4 centimeters away from her face. But she''s not yet able to focus on objects or to follow moving objects.

The first stage when our keeper looked into Yuan Bao''s eyes, it looks a bit dusty and not very clear.Reflection is not very strong. But now both eyes seem quite good. Panda babies will develop on their own. What our veterinary staff or keepers can do is learn from the other individuals. We have our expectations which means probably by 80 days, Yuan Bao may have the hearing ability.
Taipei Zoo spokesman Eric Tsao says that Yuan Bao is healthy and developing well. By 80 days old, she’s likely to be able to hear sounds. By 90 days old, she’ll likely be able to see objects up to 1 meter away.
