I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the apartment complex I was living at in Mesa Arizona was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance they had the option to move out or pay full market value rent without assistance. I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing in my area was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors and was unavailable to find another place to live. I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit. I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck. So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised. I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts. I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible. I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade. I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school. I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration. Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do .

I was homeless for about 3 years all together. Now I bust my ass at work daily. I don’t get any help from the government. I don’t get housing or food stamps. I love how every time u have to qualify a homeless person as NOT an alcoholic or addict so we can actually feel bad for them. Cause u know, if u can’t control ur drinking and drugs clearly it’s ur fault, but if u just can’t steer ur life and you’re sober you’re innocent we feel bad... ridiculous in my opinion

It's not even about addicts. They're purposely pricing ppl out of affordable housing from L.A. all the way up the west coast, Sir. Washington State actually does a pretty good job at housing the homeless. The pandemic was a more unusual setting to gage the challenges of affordable housing and homelessness. Homelessness prevention is a bigger issue. In America home ownership is becoming harder to achieve and most renters are paying 50% or more of their income on housing alone. Personally, I don't believe anyone should have to pay more than 18% of their income on housing.

At the end of the day like Dow said Seattle is a victim of its own success. WAY TO MANY out of towners move here for jobs in tech. Which they then demand more of local businesses which drives the daily costs up. But the biggest problem is the fucking greedy landlords. I’ve lived here since 1992 and have seen the rental prices go through the roof within the last 15 years. Drugs are a huge issue yes, but that’s only exacerbated by not having a place to live which you can afford. If you had to sleep on the street you don’t think booze or drugs would help! Of course you’d fall into the self medicating trap as well. WE NEED RENT CONTROL IN PARTS OF THE CITY!!!

If 98% of people think the homeless are junkies and drunks then I'm one of the few that understand how easy it is to become homeless, especially if you have no family to fall back on. A lot of homeless are veterans that the govt. basically threw under the bus and didn't honor the service they're supposed to provide for them. My wife used to roll the car window up on homeless people until I made her understand that could easily be one of us. I always give the homeless whatever I can. $10, $1, and loose change I have or even water, a cigarette or food. If the community came together, we could easily put 50cents to the side every month for the cause and house and feed a lot of the homeless.

This story really broke my heart,we as a human race should always help out the poor and vulnerable, shouldn't have homelessness anywhere in this world most of all wealthy countries, the strong should help out people in need, sadly the real pandemic of this world is greed and how the rich can stand by and not help is so sad,the old,the sick and the poor suffer every day and in my opinion it's 100% governments around the world not giving a sh.t l know what its like to not have a roof over your head,l know what its like to have a disability stopping me from working and how the government doesn't help or penalises you in some form

Homelessness is NOT a lack of affordable housing problem. You must live the life you can afford. Can’t afford children? Don’t have them. Can’t afford a car? Take the bus. Can’t afford health insurance? Get on Medicaid. Can’t afford to live in a certain city? Move somewhere affordable. Be humble. Be reasonable. There will always be people who have more money than you, a nicer house than you, a nicer car than you. So what? No one owes you anything. Make your own life happen regardless.
@ColtraneAndRain3 жыл бұрын
Homeless is definitely a lack of affordable housing! There should be a wide range of housing options across these cities. Who will work in these cities to provide your services? Your latte makers and garbage collectors and grocery workers? Do you have any idea how much it costs to move? Don't have children? What about the widows and the elderly? No one owes anybody but as humans we can have compassion for those who have less. What kind of person ARE you? Jesus Christ!
