While he was popular as Godai (or Gudai) Maharaj, his real name was Pandit Shamta Prasad. I had the great privilege and good fortune of spending a lot of time with him during my childhood in Patna as Panditji used to teach my elder brother. He was, during his hey days, one of the most popular Tabla players in India and people were crazy about him in states like Bihar. The forte of his playing was his amazing sound production which was mesmerizing. Whatever he played, the bol came out with great depth and volume. His tabla used to sound stereophonic in the days of mono players and poor acoustics. I have so many fond memories associated with this great man which is not possible to write here. Thanks a lot past594 for posting this rare video. Banaras has given us so many great musicians, especially Tabla maestros. Pandit Shamta Prasad was one of them. My homage

This is one of the most sweetest and fulfilling tabla performances ever. Tonal quality at its best, sharp banaras kinaar and a deepest dhaa, this is just perfect.

Shame about the sound quality but its great to have some evidence of this great player on youtube. Its appropriate this is at the Golden Temple as he is the master of the Golden "NA" He brought a new and exciting sound to the art of Tabla.

@r8rdarklord Unless you are saying that Dhrupad-Dhamar is similiar to Carnatic style of singing. There are similarities but there are also major differences.

@sonofthedestroyer So please tell us, what were the North Indians doing before the Mughals came. We are all years unless you believe that classical music didn't exist in North India before the Mughals.

@sonofthedestroyer This is just theory there is no evidence of all this. If you think this is true then why do our scriptures refer to fair skinned people unless you think it's a figment of there imagination. The fact is the Dhrupad-Dhamar style of singing pre-dates Mughal or for that matter any invasion. Why, because of compositions, constructions and structure of Alaap. Most big gharana Ustads can trace their lineage back to there fore-fathers, who were originally hindus.
