The name Pandrethan is derived from the Sanskrit word Puranadishthana (meaning the old capital). King Ashoka founded the city in 250 BC and made it his capital. The Sculptures of Shiva and Shakti found here in it’s various manifestations indicates the prevalence of Shaivism in the valley. It also indicates the nuances and craftsmanship that had developed in the valley's sculptural art.
