The megaregion of the Indo-Pacific spanning from the east coast of Africa to the Pacific island states represents the world’s strategic and economic centre of gravity. The COVID−19 pandemic has further accelerated the pre-existing regional trends surrounding the tensions between China and the United States and the efforts to preserve and strengthen a more stable rules-based order there, which has proven to be challenging. This panel discusses the interests and strategies of the key actors and the related security cooperation. It analyses the role of regional multilateral frameworks and opines on whether it is possible to establish and maintain a free, fair and inclusive regional order in the Indo-Pacific that would minimise the geostrategic uncertainty.
