Couple of things: The scene where army's convoy gets ambushed is taken from The Best Defense story. That's also where, if I recall, the character of Christine Everheart is introduced (though Stark does not sleep with her), who works for Daily Bugle. Regarding CB Obadiah, Stark did not come ''on top''. He lost. Obadiah, much like you mentioned, saw life as a chess match in which you cannot lose. So he didn't. He committed suicide, therefore, he will not answer for his crimes. So he won, in his mind (or what was left of it after he blew his head open with a repulsor ray). The character growth of Stark, going from a weapon manufacturer to a pacifist, is taken from Bill Mantlo's brilliant one-shot story titled ''Vengeance in Vietnam''. It was the first time Stark's regret over his involvement with the millitary-industrial complex was addressed. Stark's look in the first film is very close to Sean Chen's art from the late 90s Iron Man run. Rhodey being the first guy Stark meets after escaping from captivity is part of Demon in a Bottle's flashback. The arc reactor thing-y did not exist in the comics. But it was most likely inspired by the artificial metal heart Stark received in The Mask of Iron story. And lastly, Stark did not reveal his identity to the press during a press conference. In the comics he did so when trying to save some kid's dog that was about to get hit by a car. In the movie Stark did out of narcisisim. In the comics it happened by accident when he was trying to do a heroic act.
@PanelstoPixels Жыл бұрын
Great additional info here! I'm gonna pin this for others to see. We'll have to agree to disagree on the press conference detail though. Stark jumped off the balcony where the press conference was taking place to save the dog. And then the press scramble to ask him questions as he's in the suit. I would say that definitely qualifies as "during a press conference".

Crazy that Tony kept selling weapons and fundings wars until the early 70s. Stan wanted him to be a lovable jerk, but in hindsight that’s plain evil, lol. Never caught the reference in Rhodey being the one to find Tony, good one. It’s possible that wasn’t even intentional.

This is awesome! I love the amount of cate and effort that went into this abd I hope this series can continue to all the other movies. One question though, outside of Nick Fury I'm surprised you never mentioned the Ultimate Universe Iron Man? He was referenced by the film's creatives a major inspiration for the character's modernisation in the early 2000s, such as his more pronounced playboy snarky attitude way more similar to RDJ than the mainstream Stark, his suit needing to be fitted by machines, and how the rest of the MCU would rake several elements of the Ultimate stories and combine them with the classics. Any thoughts on this or whether you'll mention the Ultimate Universe versions of characters in future videos?
@PanelstoPixels Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'll definitely be getting more into the Ultimate Universe as I continue towards The Avengers. Some of the designs in Captain America: The First Avenger are obviously Ultimate-inspired, for example. I didn't purposefully leave the Ultimate stuff out of this video but I guess its influence isn't as apparent in Iron Man, which was a pretty straight adaptation of his 616 origin. I'm also just not as familiar with the Ultimate continuity as I am 616, if I'm being honest. So I appreciate your comment keeping me on my toes!

The Iron Man concept, origin-story plot, and initial armor design: I'd probably give a pinch more credit to Jack Kirby. The red/yellow re-design looks like Steve Ditko artwork. The biggest mistake in the video has got to be the fact that Tony originally builds his armour not as a weapon, but as some kind of super-defibrillator to keep his heart going and this fact plays a major role in lots of stories from the 60's and 70's. Obviously, it's completely skipped in the movie. And, "unfortunately" when speaking of Warren Ellis? Are you kidding me?
@PanelstoPixels Жыл бұрын
Tales of Suspense #39, page 5: "This I promise you... I shall build the most fantastic *weapon* of all time!... I'll build it, all right. But it will be mine..." Neither is this skipped in the movie. There's a whole scene where Yinsen explains that the shrapnel is getting closer to his heart and Tony builds the arc reactor to stop it. And since you've been ignorant about everything else in your comment, it shouldn't surprise me that you are ignorant of the testimonials of literally almost 100 women. Don't let the door hit you!
@federicomazzoncini3542 Жыл бұрын
@@PanelstoPixels if you want to insinuate someone's ignorance about something and you choose to use a quote to do so, I would suggest that you do so using the full sentences, not just the ones you're comfortable with, Fox News style. You may risk sounding less intelligent than you would like to make yourself out to be. For your convenience, the full quote would be: “This I promise you... I shall build the most fantastic weapon of all time!... I'll build it, all right. But it will be mine... made for only one purpose… to keep me alive” (bold as per the original book). See? It works much better to explain the point of view that Tony Stark primarily wanted to build a contraption to keep him alive and secondarily a weapon (so he could exploit the enemy's labs). Amazing, isn't it? And for the Warren Ellis topic, I couldn't care less about anyone's testimonies (although I'm perfectly aware of them), we're talking about one of the best English-language comics writers of the last 30 years, and that's the topic you're dealing with: English-language comics. Funny, huh? Or are you part of that unfortunate coven who think Caravaggio's Judith and Holofernes is a horror because a murderer and rapist painted it? I don't see no doors that may cause me harm. Do you?

He used the same chat up lines on a bunch of women successfully. Grown women, consensually. Over 50 of them... There is of course an argument about the power disparity between the famous and clever writer and the bunch of fan girls he slept with based on some empty promises. The industry has forgiven literal wife beaters and rapists... but the guy that gave half the modern comis world a voice... nope still persona non grata. The guy you could argue was literally responsible for 25 billion in movie money for Disney. Disgraced writer Warren Ellis. And so we've not had anything from the guy since. Meaning artists not getting the break warren would give them. The guy gave attention to a murderer's row of artistic Talent.
