It's amazing how many writers of beautiful works are disappointed by their immediate response.

+zed1207 Yes, it is odd how many of the greatest artists are hated in their own lives. A tragic life. What do you make of modern "pop" art who are beloved and worshiped in their lifetimes, does that mean it is insignificant. I supposed it does, because they create for others and not themselves.

Goethe es considerado como el hombre con el coeficiente intelectual mas alto de la historia. El fue un hombre intelectual, elocuente, idealista, osado, imaginativo, influyente y comprensivo.

Among the German polymath geniuses Leibniz and Goethe are the best there is, in a country of great mathematicians, engineers and writers. I don't know anyone else who is up to his standards in Germany afterwards. For me, as Goethe is more understandable, I feel much closer.

The "oe" is pronounced like Ö, the O with Umlaut. The "th" is just pronounced as "t" and the "e" in the end is a Schwa-sound. I would advise you to just open a Goethe-video that made by a native German. Almost everyone will mention hie name early in the video. Then you will know how to pronounce his name correctly.

As i have to say: This is a very distinctive discussion about Goethe, which is excellently presented. These are moments revealing the lack of common culture in todays german society, that i have to miss such reasonable and erudite discussions about germanys greatest and at that mostly misunderstood writer.

Goethe was not a Mathematician like the polymath Dr Jacob Bronowski, and probably not as intelligent as Bronowski was. He was certainly nowhere near as intelligent as Bronowski's friend, the polymath John von Neumann. And although perhaps not overrated, Goethe could not write poetry as good as William McGonagall or Alfred Austin! Goethe was perhaps as intelligent as me though, I don't know? - Mike.

John von Neumann, like Goethe was claimed to know all the knowledge in the world. I don't mean things like, where I live, or where Fred Blogs down the road lives in the world or how many hydrogen atoms there are in the sun to the exact figure. All the general knowledge available, John von Neumann was claimed to know!

Goethe was sorely disappointed that he was famous for all the verbose philosophical and legal crap rather than his principal interest (science, specifically optics). He wrote repeatedly about this. I judge all biographies on whether they recognise/cite this. This biography?……nope….they veer instantly to poetry. He made an absolute distinction between formal science and literature. The interviewee directly contradicts himself practically in the same sentence in this regard.
